ok so let’s do some analysis. we all know season one steve is kinda characterized as an fboy, but season four season steve is general considered to be more of a gentleman and a mother figure. hence, option one would make the most sense.
HOWEVER, there’s the obvious tension between eddie and steve. (and okayyyy maybeeee im a little biased cuz i ship them). steve is also not super physically close with people.
we only see him being physically close with people who he is implied to be romantically involved with.
clearly, we see a lot of physical intimacy between steve and nancy. there is also physical closeness between steve and robin, hinting at steve’s (brief) romantic feelings for robin. beyond that, robin is a far more physically affectionate character than steve and is more casual about physical touch, which is part of the reason we see a physical closeness between the two.
beyond that, we don’t see steve having close physical interactions with other characters. yes, he hugs dustin and whatnot, but this is displayed in a sort of parental light, so it doesn’t align with the qualifications of the intimacy between steve and potential romantic interests.
yet steve has a LOT of physically close interactions with eddie, and in only one season. eddie, much like robin, is displayed to be a bit more casual about this sort of closeness, but the sheer quantity of times steve and eddie are shown close to one another is beyond notable.
the obvious images, of course, but also the following:
which parallels…..
this shot.
not to mention:
okie well that’s what i got for yall. to all the steddie haters: i hope this expands ur perspective. steddie fans: i hope this helps you feel more joy and hope.
that’s my argument for #2 btw.
Everyone knows the age old question: where is Steve’s hand?
Well I have a proposition or two:
Imagine trying to explain stuff about our time to them to, like smart phones, they'd probably just think you're crazy. Would probably have dustin contact suzie to get more of an understanding what you're even talking about, especially since she knows what internet is
OK, ellie, hear me out, I'm on a run with this idea of like an angelface, who somehow accidentally Timetravled all the way back to the 80's, from our time, (could easily be something to do with gates that somehow keep opening?) And ends up waking up in the woods that apparently all of em live by for some reason, say like eddie or Steve find you, lost, confused, scared and dirty cause god know what ever hell you saw and were in before you finally appeared in hawkins in the 80's.
They end up bringing you in and kind of gather everyone to just try and get things figured out. Get your name, information like where you're from and if you happen to know what even happened.
You end up explaining that you're from a completely different time, in the future none the less, I mean, how hard could it be for them to believe? They've fought and seen stuff far less likely to be real than some random time traveling person, right?
They get to know you, get a little attached and obviously dread of the idea of you having to go back to your time and maybe try and convince you to stay, but ultimately understand that you have to go back
UNLESS its the yabdere fruity four. Not only keeping you trapped with them in whoever's house, I'd assume steve's and would also switch between his and eddies but they're also keeping you from going back to your own time. Like, listen, I've been obsessing a little bit over your yandere fruity four and this idea of some accidental time traveling angelface has been on my mind and I think its mostly cause I started watching time wasters, but like, just having to help them fight something from the upside down again just to get home is just my current brain rot and it makes it better with yanderes. I'm sorry I'm like this oml 😭
hey felly how does it feel knowing you're literally making me feral, this is SUCH GOOD SHIT-
like, super-traumatized angelface stumbling out of a gate in Hawkins after being chased through one by some weird....dog....thing, with horrible leathery skin and way too many teeth and that piercing screech. and just your luck, you keep running through the forest without knowing whether or not you're still being chased, not knowing if you're still in that horrible other world, until you crash right into somebody and hit the dirt on top of them.
Steve, i feel like, wouldn't let you get up right away--he'd grab you by the arms and ask if you're alright, because you're shaking so bad and he can tell you must have saw something terrifying, and will help you up while trying to reassure you that it's okay. whoever you are, he won't let you get hurt. you remind him a little of the kids, his kids, in that moment, and he just hurries you back to the closest house with an arm wrapped tight around your shoulders to keep you close. there's no way you could fake terror like that, and he keeps a close eye over his shoulder, because he knows just what kind of things happen in Hawkins and he won't let someone else fall victim to them, if he can help it. especially not someone as cute as you, even with all that dirt in your hair and your face.
Eddie would be dumbstruck for a few moments, but when you scramble to get up with tears in your eyes and start running again, he chases after you until he manages to catch you. probably gets an elbow to the face or a kick to the shins when he grabs you and you start thrashing, crying and wailing for him not to kill you--but luckily he's pretty good at calming you down and promises he's not gonna do anything of the sort, he just wants to know why the hell a pretty thing like you is out in the woods so late at night? shouldn't you be at home, like, watching a movie or listening to pink floyd or something? and the look you give him when he says that makes him just as confused as you look, the "what's pink floyd?" even more so. and yeah, Eddie's not gonna let you wander around the woods when you're clearly an amnesiac or something--he's gonna take you home and let you clean up, without yet knowing just how much of this particular time you're not familiar with. and show you some real music in the meantime, while he calls the others to figure out what to do with you.
You know, I just saw a edit of Eddie Munson on TikTok and I thought back to how after he died I DESPERATELY wanted him to come back as Kas like a bat mutant kind of thing and struggle under Vecna’s control … but after seeing what Arcane did to Vander I’ll be very happy if Eddie stays dead
This is me until season 5 airs. I will hold onto this theory with my LIFE!

When Mike wears yellow and Will wears blue, you know an argument is about to happen that has gay ass symbolism with Mike projecting onto Will
Dude I just keep thinking about how this season is like Security Breach. Not literally but it’s like how it was hyped up with the trailers and interviews saying something completely different than the actual product. I like Vol 1, like how I liked most of Security Breach, and then vol 2 came in with its ending, which is exactly how I felt with Security Breach’s ending. (Specifically the Afton Ending)
The difference? Security Breach can fix itself. Sure not really story wise, but with its new DLC it can. I can tell they wanted to do something but didn’t have enough time and they really cared about the game.
Stranger Things? It can’t fix itself because it’s a show. And maybe S5 can fix it, but we will never forget how bad S4 Vol 2 was. We don’t know wtf was happening and whether there were actual scenes they cut out, we won’t know what the true intention was.
The bigger difference? I at least still like Security Breach afterwards. It hurt for a bit as a fan since 2014-2015 but that’s how change is. I can still enjoy it for what it is. Stranger Things is something I can’t get behind. I can’t tell if the Duffers really cared about this season, I can’t tell wtf they were doing and I can’t forgive them for it. I can forgive Steel Wool because the development of Security Breach obviously had a lot of ups and downs. (The whole controversy with Scott, whether we like it or not, did affect that game’s development) and I can sympathize with them.
I can’t sympathize with the Duffers though.
And Ik that it’s really stupid to talk about Security Breach with Stranger things, but this whole thing gave me a flashback to when the game came out and the aftermath. I just kinda realized how similar the two are development and story wise. My brain is tired
Villain Will Byers with powers. Villain Will Byers with powers. Villain Will Byers wi-
OH MY GOD IT IS EXACTLY LIKE SECURITY BREACH ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME-
do we not get queerbaited in these new shots?
S4 is Stranger Things’ FNAF: Security Breach story wise. It feels rushed and underwritten, at least Security Breach can fix some things with the new DLC, but a show can’t sadly. So much hype for it, the trailers and interviews made us expect something more, and then nothing. Seriously S4 is the Security Breach of Stranger Things
Remember when Finn said:
“Probably a mutual understanding and acceptance”
This answer was regarding Will’s feelings, not his sexuality.
So there will be a confession in Volume 2 and it’s a mutual understanding. Which means he understands the feeling, and that it is mutual. Now, maybe I am stupid and that mutual does not mean you feel the same, but still, that wording gave me hope. Because it’s like “The feeling is mutual.”
I might be crazy and I probably am reaching who knows? But for the people who say that this was negative? That’s honestly a positive in my opinion
I would like to say this is not an attack towards anyone who ships Melvin. I don’t even want it to show up on their tag, but if any of them find this, just know I am doing an analysis and that anyone who attacks me for it is not cool. I also ship byler which could make my point less convincing, but I am not trying to be biased. None of this comes from a bias, just me talking about a relationship that I have grown to highly dislike and show why it has a high chance of breaking up.
With that out of the way, Melvin is a relationship between the characters Mike and El in Stranger Things, and has been canon since season 1. They didn’t really get together until the end of S2 and it has been that way ever since. Many people think that this relationship is cute and yes, it is, but let’s replace the is with was.
Ever since season 3 this relationship has been shown to be quite toxic. I noticed how my opinion on Melvin was positive until season 3 and it’s funny how it’s when they actually became a couple. In fact, I noticed that Melvin became toxic when they got together. This shows that maybe they should not be together at all and that has been Duffers intention.
To show why it’s always been toxic, is how no one in the show has said anything positive about it at all. Ever since season 1, the party thinks Mike has crush on her, but they don’t find this cute or endearing, they mock it. An example would be Lucas teasing Mike about El:
Lucas: El! I love you so much! Would you marry me?
Mike: Shut up Lucas
You could say Lucas approves of the crush, but the way he also went “If you love her so much why don’t you just marry her?” Which is more of a negative thing to say than a positive. I get that this was when the party just met El, and Lucas didn’t trust her at the time. But still, it was intentional. The over exaggeration that Lucas does is, in my interpretation, a way of the Duffers mocking Melvin. Which goes into my next point.
The Duffers show how their relationship doesn’t work romantically. Ever since they have become a couple, they have had problems. S3 is a huge example with them breaking up and both of them not even being sad about it. You’d think that such a strong bond would be sad about their relationship ending at least a little, but it’s not. Even the scene where Mike says he loves her, everyone reacts in such a weird way. Like they think he’s lying.
What makes it better is how humorous their breakup in S3 is. Like the Duffers do not take their romantic relationship seriously. Whenever they are together, they act so out of character to where it doesn’t feel real, which is most likely intentional. Because their romance is a lie.
This also just doesn’t affect the two of them, it also affects everyone else around them. With them ditching their friends when they were going to meet Dustin’s girlfriend and have them all complain about it. Sure, Max says “It’s romantic” but not even an episode later she starts going against their relationship. I feel Max is supposed to represent the audience, most found it romantic or cute in earlier seasons, but after seeing their relationship more clearly, it’s just bullshit and they need to break up.
Let’s not forget the constant Ted and Karen parallels. Which I touched upon here. Especially with the new season’s main messages being about conformity, which is what their relationship is, conformity. These two work better as friends, not as a romantic pairing.
Another example of their romance being a lie is how when they became a couple, they both lie to each other. First it’s Mike in S3, then it’s El in S4. Which actually can be proven with of the most popular phrases in this show “Friends don’t lie.”
Friends don’t lie. El never lied to Mike when they were just friends and vice versa, but when they became a couple, it was all lies. Because their love is a lie. They didn’t actually love each other in a romantic sense.
Now you could say that S4 has taken a more serious tone with their relationship and argument, but the reason it’s serious is because this is where they realize that this isn’t what they actually want. They are taken seriously when they are a friendship. The fact that eulogy played in the background of their argument in S4 shows that their romance is dead. It’s always been. This can also be proven with Mike calling it an “argument you can’t come back from.” What’s something that you can’t come back from? Death. Their romance is dead.
There’s also the whole superhero thing. This has been here since season 1. In the same scene I mentioned with Lucas mocking Mike earlier, Dustin compares El to plenty of superheroes (X-men and green lantern) with Lucas saying “She’s not a superhero. She’s a weirdo.” You’d think Mike would shut both of them down, like with something like “She’s a person.” Or something like that. Usually I find that to be more romantic when it comes to something like this and you have a character who’s supposedly in love. But he does the same thing Dustin does by saying “The X-men were weirdos.”
This to me shows how Mike does not love El, with season 4 proving this even more, but it also shows how this was intended. Mike admires her, of course he cares about her, but it’s not romantic it’s just admiration. And that’s why having Mike tell El he loves her would be more damaging to their relationship because now El has her powers back, so Mike saying he loves her after just proves how he doesn’t actually love her. And you know what? Maybe we should have a scene where Mike tells El he loves her, but she shuts it down and tells him that he doesn’t. Making him realize that maybe they shouldn’t be together, after all, friends don’t lie.
There are plenty of other examples of how their romantic relationship never worked from the start and how they are not endgame, but I am going a bit too long here, and I feel that I might continue this post with more examples, like a part 2 or something. But that’s all for now.
In conclusion, Mike and El were never supposed to work out as a romantic pairing. And they will break up this season as that is the more healthiest and logical conclusion for their romance. Despite this show not exactly being realistic (it involves supernatural beings after all) it is realistic with their relationships. Keep that in mind.
Recently there has been a argument in the fandom about why Mike can’t say he loves El. With some saying he’s gay or he doesn’t love El that way or he doesn’t know how to say it.
I am a believer that Mike is gay and doesn’t love El in a romantic way, but I also believe that a argument made by Melvin fans is also true and that is Ted and Karen’s relationship affecting their children’s view of love.
Most of them argue that The Wheeler parents are why Mike cant say he loves El because they never shown love to each other. I do think they are right on the part about Ted and Karen’s relationship affecting their children, but I disagree how it has affected them.
It is true that Ted and Karen are in a loveless marriage, and that has been shown to actually affect Mike and Nancy. Nancy has been aware of this fact and she even repeats their mistake, Mike’s is more subtext but it with him dressing exactly like his parents in S3. (Karen’s yellow striped shirt and Ted’s teal shirt or whatever color it is).
This has shown that Mike and Nancy have been affected by their parents’ loveless marriage but it’s not because they can’t say it or show it, it’s because they are repeating their parents’ relationship. Thinking they are in love with someone, but in reality, they aren’t.
Nancy is aware of the fact that her parents don’t love each other. She has a scene where she talks to Johnathan about it but there’s an irony to it, because she is in a relationship where she doesn’t actually love Steve. Which is why she can’t say she loves him, because she doesn’t. The way that Ted and Karen had met and got married are kind of exactly like how Nancy is with Steve.
Nancy: My parents never loved each other.
Johnathan: They must’ve married for some reason
Nancy: My mom was young, my dad was older. But he had a cushy job, money, came from a good family, and started their nuclear family
Really shows how Ted and Karen only got together because of circumstance and not actual love. Because of expectations. Which is where Mike’s relationship with El comes into play.
Throughout season 1, Mike’s friends keep on telling him he totally is in love with El. Basically expecting him to love her, when he doesn’t. Mike may seem to not notice or really care about his parents relationship, but like Nancy, it has him unaware of doing the same thing. He doesn’t love El, at least not romantically. Which can explain why he can’t say he loves her, he thinks or thought this is what love is, but it’s not.
Stancy literally broke up because Nancy didn’t love Steve and could never say it to him. Which is literally what Mike and El are going through right now.
Mike and Nancy are repeating their parents relationships, it’s not that they can’t express love, it’s that they mistook their love for something that wasn’t and learned to fall in love with someone else. This season’s message is about going against conformity, which is literally Ted and Karen’s relationship, and to break through it. That is how Ted and Karen have affected Mike and Nancy.
