I’ve just finished reading The Girl Who Chased the Moon and magic realism is my new favourite thing - historical fantasy has always been my lane, but I’m definitely branching out. I have already ordered some more of Sarah Addison Allen’s books and I’m thinking of making a list of some more magical realism books. Recommendations are welcome!

You Are Amazing

A girl flowing her gown and walking towards the jungle

It happened once again. She saw that dream again, though not an actual dream but a terrible nightmare. She found herself at the same place, debilitating. Where nothing was visible, only darkness prevailing at everything. She was crying and screaming for help, but nobody came to rescue her.

A girl is running towards jungle

She heard that people often help girls if they are in need of it, but nobody came for her. Why? Was it because she was not beautiful? Or maybe because she was not fair as a girl should be? She cried over and over again, wandering everywhere on the streets, reaching for myriads of people, asking them to help her, but nobody gave a damn about her. She was devastated, yet hoping that she would be alright like all the happy people used to be. Days had passed, but her situation was getting worse than before. Nothing good was happening to her.

A magical lamp in the middle of nowhere

Maybe because she was so irreparable that no solution seemed reasonable to her. But one fine day, she met a few people. People who suffered a lot in their life. Instead of lamentation, they were living their lives like a hero, believing they had won battles. Battles, that made them the great people they wanted to be. Those moments exchanged with them gave her hope to deal with her pain. With each passing day, she was becoming more powerful, both mentally and physically. A new believer, acknowledging that everything would be okay if only she learned how to fight like a warrior. Then one fine day, she saw herself standing in front of a door. A door she had never seen before. Never in any dream or in a nightmare. Surprisingly, she did not remember how she reached there. A door which was shining brighter than anything she had ever seen in her life. She was striding ahead to reach the doorknob. As she opened the door, it became impossible to see what was lying there. But suddenly the light was starting to get fainter, and then she finally saw that that light was coming from a mirror. A beautifully carved mirror that she once saw in an antique shop.

A girl is playing with firecracker

As soon as she touched it, that mirror evolved into HER. It was impossible to believe for the human eye, but that mirror started to speak. It said, “Beauty always resides in you. It does not matter whether you are rich or poor, dark or fair, tall or short. Remember that you are precious. What you have, nobody else has ever had. Be who you are. If you ever try to be like someone else, then you will lose the charm you have. People are depressing themselves with the things they can never have. It is better for you to be happy with what you have right now. If you cry for the things you never had, how will you enjoy and cherish the things to have? Life is a mixture of appreciating small moments that stay with us till we die. Live your life to the fullest, not just drag your days to death. You never know when death will take you. Work hard, have faith and achieve anything, and everything good in life.”

But Tooru had to, somehow, have the bad luck of attracting the soul-searching eyes of pretty Ushijima Wakatoshi with his taciturn nature, dry wit and soothing quiet; an ass of epic proportions simply because Tooru cannot figure out for the life of him, how a Wizard of Ushiwaka’s stand can be so terribly unimaginative and dull.

It’s off-putting to say the least and if Tooru hates anything then it’s a) people who are better than him and b) especially if they have nothing that makes them stand out from an average crowd of Wizards in The Consortium.

Traits which unfortunately also apply to Ushijima Wakatoshi.

It’s one of the reasons he doesn’t quite know what to do with Satori.

Aside from the fact that Tooru is pretty certain that he shouldn’t be caught dead with the redhead who has been excised from The Consortium at thirteen, he knows that was Satori has is special.

Tooru doesn’t know what it is, but it’s…

It has bite.

It has teeth.

There’s a prickle of something metallic and acidulously dangerous at the back of Tooru’s tongue every time he gets to witness Satori’s Magic up close and personal.

Most days, thinking about Satori makes him angry.

The Girl Who Became an Olive Tree

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved the world and all its creatures with every fiber of her being. Her heart overflowed with compassion and empathy for every living thing. She felt the joy and pain of others as if they were her own, and she yearned to make a difference, to bring comfort and healing to those in need.

As she grew older, the weight of the world's sorrows began to bear down upon her slender shoulders. She witnessed the suffering of people and animals, the destruction of nature, and the endless conflicts that tore communities apart. Her tender heart, so full of love and concern, felt each wound as if it were inflicted upon her own soul.

Despite her best efforts to spread kindness and light, the young girl found herself overwhelmed by the magnitude of the world's troubles. The more she tried to help, the more she felt the pain of others seeping into her very core. Her once vibrant spirit began to dim, and her steps grew heavy with the burden of empathy.

One day, as she sat beneath an ancient olive tree, seeking solace from the chaos that surrounded her, a profound realization took root in her mind. She understood that the tree, with its gnarled trunk and reaching branches, stood tall and strong amidst the turmoil of the world. It did not involve itself in the affairs of others, but simply existed, growing slowly and steadily, deepening its roots into the earth.

In that moment, the girl made a decision. She would become like the olive tree, distancing herself from the cares of the world and focusing inward on her own growth. She closed her eyes and felt her body transform, her limbs lengthening and hardening into branches, her skin roughening into bark. She became the tree, standing firm and unmoving, no longer buffeted by the winds of sorrow and strife.

"A tree remains a tree," she said. "It doesn't experience everything. It's not to blame for anything. It's planted in the earth and stands still, deepening its roots..."But what she didn't know was that even as a tree, she never stopped feeling. Deep within her woody core, the love and compassion that had always defined her continued to pulse like sap through her veins. She may have taken the form of a tree, but her essence remained unchanged.

Only at night would she awaken and go swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. She was half girl, half tree, until she met a boy with the purest heart in the world. In the full moon, one could see that his heart's radiance was stronger than the moon itself. His innocent, wise, and kind-hearted gaze penetrated her eyes, allowing her to emerge from the self-imposed spell of defense and consider returning to life.

But instead of encouraging her to leave her tree form behind, he joined her as a tree by her side. They intertwined together into the biggest and strongest olive tree in the world, providing shade and solace for all. Upon its branches, countless peace doves cooed together, dispersing olive branches as all over the world.

Then, the laughter of children was heard from all directions, and a blend of languages woven together in delicate beauty, creating a stunning velvet ocean of coexistence. And the mighty intertwined olive tree? Stood at the center of it all, spreading love and empathy and gifting shadow and most delicious olives to the whole world till the very this day.

“Did your wish come true?” // “I am not entirely certain yet.” // “You shall have to let me know,” Celia says. “I hope it does. I suppose in a way, I made the Wishing Tree for you.”

“I made a wish on this tree years ago,” Marco says // “What did you wish for?” Bailey asks, hoping it is not too forward a question // “I wished for her,” he says.

WILL I EVER RECOVER FROM THIS *SCREAMS*
