Encanto (2021)

Abuela Alma: What became more clear as you got older?

Bruno: Why the Grinch wanted to live alone with his dog.

SPOILERS AHEAD KINDA

I made a list of HCs that start up after my fic Hermanito on ao3 (It's a Hurt/Comfort one shot, go ahead n check it out if you'd like!)

Practically all of the HCs are centered around mainly Bruno due to the fic, and how the family interacts with him

I'll be updating this list whenever I think of new ones so don't be afraid to revisit this list from time to time :>

-Antonio's leopard stuffy definitely ends up becoming Bruno's, much to the kid's amusement- and Bruno doesn't even realize it. He goes to bed and always wakes up with it in his arms (Antonio's animal friends always help him sneak the stuffy into Bruno's room, Dolores chips in by always letting Antonio know when Bruno needs the stuffed leopard to help him sleep better)

- After the courtyard incedent the entire family becomes a bit clingy, almost overbearingly so- even Casita. Though the quiter kids like Dolores and Louisa usually know when Bruno wants company without conversation, which they're cool with.

- Mira and Julieta bake Bruno's favorite sweets and pass "emergency" packs of them out to everyone in the family each morning before they start their busy days so if anyone notices his mood slipping they can stop what they're doing to give him a snack n lift his day a bit

- The first time a villager badmouths Bruno its on his own birthday, and it happens in front of the entire family. Unexpectedly, out of literally anyone it could have been, its the normally easy-going brother-in-law duo Felix and Augustin that get in the villagers face n threaten to make their kneecaps work backwards for daring to threaten their Hermanito (They have never in all the time theyve known him ever called him that before and Bruno nearly cries because holy shit he has brothers now-)

- Julieta nearly joined her husband and brother in law but decided it was a far better view to watch her love get so riled up and protective (One of the many reasons she loves him) She instead makes sure no one else joins and interrupts the brother-in-laws absolutely verbally destroying the villager who upset Bruno

- Isa learns what his favorite plants are and one day while the other members of the family are dragging him around town to socialize she sneaks into his room (the old guest room) and that night when he goes in his room hes greeting with the sight of the plain looking room being covered in all his favorite plants in pots and flowing out his window, Casita using the wooden window covers to wave at him. (He cries. A lot. Who wouldnt?)

- He follows Louisa around sometimes when shes running errands and tries to help- (and she lets him sometimes- passing him the smallest ((and sometimes, empty-)) bags when she hauls large carts of grain bags, passing him the reigns of the sweetest most gentle n loving donkey among the large group that has managed to escape the pen again, passing him stones the size of about a football when shes moving large boulders, etc). Despite what one would normally assume he doesn't miss the fact that she's sort of babying him, but he never says anything because he knows it's a big step for her to let anyone help at all- so he simply pays her back by making sure she drinks plenty of water and fussing over any scraps or bruises she gets from overworking herself

- Bruno becomes a sort of secondary Doctor due to the fact he's started to constantly carry around a pack full of water and some of Julieta's cooking whenever he heads to town with anyone in the family

- Augustin and Felix discover in the most amusing way possible that Bruno has the lowest alcohol tolerance known to man (it was during a celebration of some kind, they cheerfuly challenged him to a friendly drinking match- he made it maybe 5 sips in and was immediatly done for. Everyone at the party silently vowed to protect him with their lives when they witnessed him talking to someone about his incredible nieces & nephews n he immediatly started to cry over how amazing and adorable they all were and theyd all grown up so strong "You don't understand Julian, theyre the best, my god I'm so proud of them-")

- Him n Alma sit down to have tea together on Wednesdays and Sundays, quietly chatting about anything that comes to mind. Sometimes other members of the family join them, but on days where its just them they get to slowly heal their broken bond. Alma works on her patience n fear, Bruno works on his communication and anxiety

- Camilo plays pranks on anyone who insults Bruno behind his back- his pranks can sometimes dance the line between fun and cruelty though when it comes to the folks that dare insult Bruno to the mans own face (The first time he witnessed such an event, the crestfallen look on his tio's face made the weight of his own words hit him even harder, guilt over the comments he'd made about him during the song sung to Mira clouding his heart until he decides to go after the villager he'd seen insult the ex-wall hermit. He felt a lot better after and hasnt stopped since)

- The family have daily cuddle nights where they gather up a bunch of blankets n pillows n they just talk to eachother, helping eachother understand n communicate better.

One night when the younger kids are asleep, Bruno quietly opens up about how everyone's past behavior and his isolation has effected him- and once he starts, he cant stop, spilling every feeling of hurt thats ever hit his heart until all any of them can do is simply hold him and listen closely, giving him the aknowledgment and support he needs

- Sometimes when he's overwhelmed Bruno crawls back into his hole in the wall, though he usually warns someone before he does so there isn't panic over his disappearance. Over time he gradually works out of the habit, learning to talk to anyone in his family when he's struggling with things, though it takes years

- As Bruno starts to adjust to being around people again, his dry jokes become even dryer- Puns, dad jokes (tio jokes?), You name it-

He managed to get Pepa to snort over one of his oddly timed jokes once and nothing could take the smile off of his face for days afterwards

- Bruno sat Mariano down one day for a private conversation. The poor lad left the room paler than a sheet of paper, muttering about the color green and rats for a few days after, never explaining just what happened in that room ("Mi amor, your tio Bruno loves you, and if I ever piss him off just know I love you-")

Once he'd gotten over Bruno's terrifying hurt-her-theyll-never-find-you speech (Bruno eventually apologized, though when he shook Mariano's hand his grip was surprisingly strong) the two of them bonded surprisingly well over a joint love for writing poetry

~ LET IT RAIN ! I do believe that the young triplets used to support each other when they were struggling with their gifts… But Alma eventually lead them to repress their feelings and add more and more pressure on their shoulders with years passing.

Dolores: So what does it eat?

Camilo: Updog.

Antonio: [starts breakdancing]

Camilo: Not yet. Wait until she asks what that is.

Here’s an answer to a question I’ve been asked A LOT - “how tall is Mirabel?!” Official answer: 5’2” - all other characters’ heights are relative to hers, so that’s all I got… except Bruno who has, you know, a seven foot frame and 🐀🐀🐀 along his back. #Encanto

So left to right

Luisa: 6'4" / 193 cm

Isabela: 5'5" / 165.1 cm

Julieta: 5'4" / 162.6 cm

Agustin: 5'10" / 177.8 cm

Alma: 5'4" / 162.6 cm

Mirabel: 5'2" / 157.5 cm

Bruno: 5'4" / 162.6 cm

Camilo: 5'3" / 160 cm

Pepa: 5'6" 167.6 cm

Felix: 5'4" / 162.6 cm

Dolores: 5'5" / 165 cm

Antonio could be between 3'6"-3'8" (106.7 cm - 111.7 cm), but he's still only 5 so his height can change with time.

Edit: Seeing a lot of people complaining about them being so short. Need I remind you the average height for Colombians is 5'7" for men, and 5'2.5" for women in modern times. It would have been shorter in the movie's time period. Camilo is still only 15 and he could easily have another growth spurt.

Just going to give the evidence to support heights for certain characters

Camilo madrigal x villain [NAME

The villagers were sobbing, begging for the Madrigals to save them. But you knew, you knew they wouldn’t come. You stood next to your father a numb look on your face. Your father looks at you telepathically telling you to shut them up! 

With a wave of your hand a circle of fire surrounded the villagers. “SHUT UP” you scream. Slowly they all began to quiet down. A cruel smile came on our father’s face. He simply said “Kneel”. When none kneel you grew fearful. You looked to your brother, eyes pleading him not to. 

But he could only give you a look of sympathy. “KNEEL” your brother screams, electricity sparking from his hands. On command everyone kneels. One young girl doesn’t move confused. With that she is struck down with lightning. Her burnt body laying outside the of the circle. You feel a few tears fall down your face as you let out a scream. The little girls mother is sobbing, and her father is glaring at you as you walk to her body. Stopping the fire you look at her burnt body, you feel sick to your core. 

She was just a little girl who was confused. You felt angry at your brother for killing her, did he even care what her name was. You knew her name, her name was Lavender. You just couldn’t hate him. He had no choice. You BOTH had no choice. This was your life, killing, lying, torturing, and more killing. You hate it, because there is no way out. Not even in death. Bending down to her body you place a kiss on her, this makes her body burn. Then turn to ash, a gust of wind carries the ashes away. You get up sending a sad look to your brother, that is the closest thing to a thank you for the wind he would get. 

Your brother has a guilty look on his face. He hates having to kill kids. Hearing rustling behind you turn to see the Madrigals. Isabella’s dress is bloody, and torn. Dolores is on her mother ears bleeding. Pepá has a cloud above her but is otherwise okay. Felix is bruised up, and Luisa is not even there. She was dead before Julieta could heal her. Julieta’s hand is bandage as it was cut off, and has cuts all over her. Mirabel is crying, blood soaking through the dress. Abuela is holding her candle that is almost out. You can’t even look at Antonio. His small form hiding behind Camilo. 

You couldn’t even meet his gaze. It hurt to much, you know what you did was messed up. You pretend to love him to get close to him. But you didn’t know you would fall for Camilo too. By the time you realize it was to late, the plan was set in motion. You tried to stop you father but he knew what you didn’t. Father knew about your powers, but Camilo didn’t. Your father would tell him if you backed out now. This was your job, being the manipulative bitch. But it still hurt. 

“Ahh I see some of you lived to try and save your little village” Your father spat. You and your brother share a sad look that the Madrigals see. A disappointed look comes over Alma’s face. “I will ask you once leave our home. Leave and have her let the villagers go” Alma yelled. A small chuckle came from your lips, she couldn’t, no wouldn’t say your name. I was kinda funny. Your laugh didn’t go unnoticed. 

“How could you! Why did you do this to us! We could have helped you! [NAME] TELL US      WHY!”Mirabel screamed. You just turned around and watched your flames. The way the fire crackled brought you a very small piece of calm. Then you thought about what Mirabel said. Everyone was still quiet, waiting for your response. You had done because it was all you had ever known. All you had ever done was hurt people. You didn’t now what love was, so when Camilo gave it to you, you got scared, but that’s not why you did it. You did it because it was your job, the only thing you had ever known.  

“When I was young I was scared of my everything. And I mean everything. Diego would laugh at how childish I was. One day he played a little prank on me. Do you want to know what he did” you whispered. 

Now concerned Isabella open her mouth but nothing came out. For some reason she understood. This is your way of making yourself feel better about what you had done. That’s why you wouldn’t face them. That’s why you looked at the ring of fire around the villagers. Fearfully Isabella asks “ What did Diego do? [NAME] what did your brothers prank do to you”. 

“He locked me in a shed. Behind the house we lived in. Diego had filled the shed with things I feared. Spiders, snakes, it was dark, and it was a small shed. I began I panic in the shed, crying out for my big brother to let me out. As I cried I let out a scream. Then in my hand was a orb of fire. And for the first time” you paused.

Now everyone was watching you play with your flames. The flames dance in your hand.  Slowly changing into animals. The fire looked beautiful, it looked like moving glass. 

“And for the first time I wasn’t afraid of something. I stoped screaming and watched the fire in my hand. I don’t remember how long I was in the shed, but my father found me eventually. Diego was punished for scaring me. And soon after Diego found out his power” I finished. 

“My father was always there for me, how could I tell him no. So if your father told you that you needed to kill a whole village to protect yourself, you would do it. Right? My whole life I was taught to kill, manipulate, hurt, and torture. It’s all we’ve ever known. This job was no different” you spoke. It was a lie, this job was different. Because you fell in love, you felt love for the first time. Camilo’s scream caught you off guard. 

“WHAT! What do you mean this job was no different. Was it all a lie? Was everything you ever told me a lie?” Camilo screamed, tears streaming down his face. Then, uncertainly, he whispered “Was our love a lie too?”

[NAME] paused. Did she love Camilo? Or was she just trying to make herself feel better? Was she trying to convince herself that she loved Camilo? Was this all just an act for her mission?

Camilo stared at her, all the hope in his eyes diminishing. In his head he loves her, ever if she killed his cousin. The time he shared with [NAME] were the only time he could be himself. With her family he had to be perfect, just like Isabella. Everyone had to be perfect. He wanted to be free with you. He needed her, he needed her to be happy. 

“I don’t know” was all you said. You didn’t now what you wanted. Your father loves you but it was tough love. Camilo’s love was different. It made you hands sweaty, your face flush red, and made you feel warm inside. Camilo’s face dropped a little, and your father was getting mad.

“If you don’t know then there must be something the- THERE IS NOTHING THERE [NAME] DOSENT LOVE YOU” your father finished for Camilo. I wanted to yell at your father for yelling at him. He had no right! Camilo just wanted to be loved by you. Right? You didn’t know. 

“[NAME] this is what we do. You and Diego are evil, and cruel. YOU CANNOT LOVE HIM, you can’t love. You’ve done this a million times, it’s not different from all the others. Ana mlark, James hever, Becca jones, you did this with all of them. CAMILO MADRIGAL is no different. You think you love them but you don’t, you just think you do” your father shrieked. He was right about them. About Ana about James about Becca, but not Camilo. 

“[NAME] don’t do it I love you”

……….

“[NAME] you don’t love him.”

………..

“[NAME]”

“Yes Diego”

Encanto Characters and their Yellowstone Counterparts: Part 1

First, thank you @embermc for the initial comparison.

Moving along, in each post about Encanto characters and their Yellowstone counterparts, I will compare three characters per post.

John Dutton and Abuela Alma Madrigal

They are both heads of their families and small towns.

Beth Dutton and Pepa Madrigal

This one I found to be the most obvious. Not only do they look alike, but they both tend to be moody and feisty.

Rip Wheeler and Felix Matrigal

They are both chill guys who are happily married to feisty gals.

Julieta: ...How do you-

Bruno, staring into empty space over the rim of his coffee cup: There's a clown behind you.

Just thinking about Bruno watching that hot mess of an engagement dinner, and freaking the fuck out because this secret, this vision he tried so hard to hide, just gets yeeted in front of Abuela, by the power of plot development.

i really blew the dust off of this tumblr blog to rave about encanto.. damn.

Encanto magic rant

So. I loved Encanto very much. I am Latin American and that movie speaks so much to me because I love and appreciate my culture so much. But I've run into people that don't feel the same story-wise. They said there was something missing or not quite making sense so here I am just having watched some parts of the movie over again.

Story-wise this movie is different since it doesn't exactly follow the structure of other animated Disney movies: introduction, problem, climax, resolution (or something like that--remember I'm just here to rant). Encanto focuses so much on its characters and their introductions that I believe they become the plot itself. There is no villain, only an antagonist in Abuela Alma. There are no clear answers to many questions (Why did Mirabel not get a gift? What was her gift in the end? Did she even have one? Where did the magic come from? Why did it burn out? Why did it come back?), only interpretations can be made. I'll share my interpretations of these questions next.

Well, first of all, if Encanto is as based on Latin American literature as I think it is, then the magic just is. It exists. It doesn't need a reason. Magical Realism as a genre is just magic within the "normal" world with no explanation needed. It just exists and intertwines with regular life. So that's that on that explanation lol.

(This is the moment to add a disclaimer: I absolutely empathize with Abuela Alma. She went through a lot, but it doesn't change nor justify her actions or the repercussions these had on her family. I still love her even though I hated her a lot a little in the movie. Ok. It's complicated, I know.✨Latin American family dynamics.✨ Moving on.)

Regarding Mirabel's gift here's where it gets interesting. I believe that Mirabel has the gift that was supposed to be Abuela Alma's. Abuela Alma was given the candle, hence the Encanto, for safety; she was basically appointed the leader of the people with her. Her purpose was to keep the Encanto safe. But the Encanto is not only the physical place--her children are a part of it as well, as they are magical and so is every descendant of theirs. So, what happens when the children and grandchildren don't feel happy or safe because of the pressure Alma puts on them? The Encanto fades away (or breaks) because Alma is not caring for the Encanto (her family) properly.

Here's where Mirabel comes in. She is the one most in contact with their Casita: she speaks to it, notices the small changes in its behavior, gets the most help from it, etc. She is the one noticing something wrong with the magic in general and is the one that starts looking for a way to fix it, while Alma, who is supposed to be its protector and caretaker, just brushes Mirabel's worries off and accuses her of jealousy. A clear example of this is in the scene with Isabela's song where Mirabel listens and understands how unhappy Isabela has always been with her role in the family. Right after she accepts Isabela for who she wants to be and Isabela starts using her gift in a way that makes her happy the cracks in the Casita begin to heal. Mirabel's acceptance and nurture keep the family together. That's her gift.

Mirabel helps her family realize that they are not their gifts. Look at Luisa--she feels absolutely useless without her gift to the point where she breaks down because she loses it. Alma sort of conditioned her love with the magical gifts given to each family member. And without their gifts, Alma wouldn't appreciate them (look what happened to Mirabel) and that didn't make them feel safe or happy. Only when they all felt loved and safe and accepted for being their true selves (without their magic) was the magic able to come back. And who did that? Mirabel. And how did it happen? When she put the knob on the door like how the rest of her family members got their own gifts and rooms. Only she didn't get a mere room, she got a magic HOUSE that is supposed to reflect her gift. And who inhabits it? Her FAMILY.

In the end, Alma and Mirabel's gift (according to my theory) is not physical like the rest of their family's, their gift is more subjective. They are protectors.

SPOILERS FOR ENCANTO

Finally seen Encanto and my god I loved this film, extroardinary. So many scenes struck me but the scene with Bruno's plate engraved on the table was just too much, I even hit my popcorn in pain

Encanto is coming out today and I can't wait > <.

I try to avoid spoilers as much as possible but still wanted to celebrate its release. I do not hide either that Bruno is adorable and that if he turns out to be the bad guy I will surely not hold the shock.

Anyway, this drawing is supposed to be a much bigger piece but we'll see if I can finish it one day.
