Anyway, I just didn't expect how the chapter went, but I it makes me scared.
⚠️ SPOILER BSD CHAPTER 117⚠️
I need, and when I say I need it's true, for Dazai to be in pure rage when he finds what happened to Kunikida. Like genuinely. Even worse than Junichiro's reaction. He is no longer the Dazai we know, but a mad man on the verge of despair. He is angry that he treats him like this. Him and his ideals? You don't treat him well? Very well, Dazai will take care of you.
Oh boy that'll be crazy

I have some theories about the Tanizaki siblings.
As far as we know, they have a weird relationship, but we don't know anything.
So here is my main theory :
Their parents died when they were young. So Junichiro became Naomi's mother, father and brother figure. She became his only family, his only reason for living when they were just children. Wich explain why he's so protective over her. She's the only person he has.
And for Naomi, she probably has Oedipus syndrome. For those who don't know, it's when children say they will marry their parents/sisters/cousins or someone in the family because they love them, but not in a romantic way but because they mostly don't know what love is. They're like "My dad is the strongest, I'm gonna marry him" or things like that. And since Junichiro is the only person who acted like her brother, mother, and father she acted this way towards him. Now, she's 15 and he's 18. We already saw that Naomi is actually a smart and brave girl. And Junichiro is more "confident" without her. But when they're together, Naomi probably acts like a child again, because she wants to feel like it again.
I wish they can have a character development.
I'm sorry but Junichiro and Atsushi are so best friend coded.
the ada is such a loser compared to every other organization they go up against. they've got like eight members. they work out of a rented office above a coffee shop. half of them probably also live there. they're all broke. and yet everyone from the mafia to the government to the most powerful foreign gifteds see them as an equal opponent. and they're right.
hc that kyouka like. mimics people to show her affection, since she isnt good with words n stuff.
like one time she and atsushi were riding the bus somewhere and atsushi brought his knees up to his chest and just kinda sat curled up on the bus seat like that and kyouka looked at him for a minute before doing the same thing then looking at him with like these big cat eyes. atsushi was a bit confused but he smiled and sorta nudged against her and she smiled back
kunikida was pacing in the ada offices one day (dazai was later than usual and he was stressing a bit) and kyouka kinda just started walking next to him. she didnt really know why he was pacing but she thought it would help if he did it with him (it did, in a way)
naomi will be talking nonsense to a cat that she met on the street and kyouka has no idea why she would be doing that??? why is she saying made up words to this animal??? but she sees that naomi is really happy so she crouches down and starts babbling to the cat
tanizaki is worried at first bc sometimes theyll be sitting at the same desk and hes working in complete silence (like he always does, except for when someone is talking to him) and he'll look over at kyouka and shes just. sitting there. silent. and hes so worried bc he wants her to feel safe and he wants her to like him but shes always just. sitting there staring at him.
until one day, shes sitting with him and he starts drumming his fingers on the desk, waiting for a document to upload. then he hears a second set of fingers drumming the rhythm with him. he looks up, confused and sees kyouka looking at him, drumming her fingers. he stops, and as soon as he does her fingers go still. he starts up again, and so does she. he cant stop smiling the rest of the day.
kenji takes kyouka to a park for a picnic, after he found out shes never been on one. he takes out some orange slices and puts one in his mouth so it looks like a smile. she stares at him before doing the same thing, struggling a bit. they look at each other for a moment before bursting out laughing.
idk shes so important to me <33333
Previous Part: Part ½
<Thanks for lovely cover page @bsduwu)
Sorry it took me so long but I finally finished the first half of the au novel that was included as a bonus in the DVD/BD of the anime. The novel is called Gakuen Bungou Stray Dogs (Bungou Stray Dogs School) and is consisted of 2 parts, the first half is included in DVD/BD Vol 2 and the second half is in Vol 8. It is about 80 pages in total. It has also been adapted into a story in the game Bungou Stray Dogs: Tales of the Lost so you may find the story familiar.
Below is some of the notes I would like to read before proceeding.
- Please buy the DVD/BD to support the authors if you can.
- I don’t mind if you use bits of it for analysis or credits, but do not repost the whole thing out of Tumblr.
- Feel free to retranslate it if you want, but keep in mind that my translation is not perfect as I am not fluent in neither English nor Japanese.
- I am translating casually at my pace so I can’t promise when the next part will come out. But I will make time for it when I can.
That’s it. Happy reading!

here’s some evidence now that it’s been confirmed canon…
everyone who’s read irl Tanizaki’s book knew that Junichiro & Naomi weren’t siblings as soon as they introduced themselves
BUT just because the Tanizakis aren’t siblings doesn’t mean you can’t feel uncomfortable about them. if you feel uncomfortable, GOOD. that’s exactly what they want
the Tanizakis, Mori— they all use these disturbing ruses to disarm or distract people in order to protect themselves, or to accomplish their goals. this is a writing device that asagiri commonly employs as a way to parallel the irl literature (it’s actually ingenious)
1. most obviously— their character designs. Harukawa is extremely intentional with character designs, & she very intentionally made Naomi & Junichiro look nothing alike
their eye shapes are purposely different
their color palettes are contrasting
even their differing styles of clothing have meaning
this was all done so that the audience could PLAINLY see that they’re not related— so that WE know that they’re lying when they say they ARE related
2. how the people around them respond to their act.
the general reaction is “don’t question it”— which is exactly what they want. “be distracted by how uncomfortable you feel so that you look away from what we’re hiding” (this is likely a protective measure)
3. most importantly, this is meant to parallel irl Tanizaki’s book “Naomi,” where the main character Joji picks up Naomi to raise her into his ideal woman, but since she's so young (& a minor) they call each other cousins (Joji makes no sexual advances on young Naomi btw)
however, his plan backfires because when Naomi gets older & they get married, she flips the script on him & manipulates HIM so that he's under her thumb (which is why bsd Tanizaki is at a domineering Naomi's mercy). Joji let her have her way because of his masochistic tendencies
4. lastly is the emphasis that Asagiri and the Tanizakis themselves put on calling each other siblings.
over & over, it’s “my brother this” & “my sister that”
like they’re desperately trying to convince us that it’s true (“don’t let your lying eyes deceive you”)
here are just a few of many examples from the light novels…
again, if you’ve read “Naomi” you knew that Junichiro & Naomi weren’t siblings as soon as they introduced themselves
just like if you’ve read irl Mori’s works, it’s clear that bsd Mori isn’t a pedophile
just like if you’ve read No Longer Human you know that Dazai’s an unreliable narrator. he makes you think he’s a bad person bc he believes he’s a bad person, but those around him see him differently (btw this doesn’t mean he’s never done anything “bad,” though bsd isn’t about morality— but that’s another discussion)
anyway, i’m so excited for the Tanizakis backstory to be revealed so that we can better understand why they use this defense!!
also let this be a reminder to READ THE LITERATURE if you’re able to!! even reading synopses & analyses of the coordinating books makes bsd make much more sense 🥹
reminder that this how you’re supposed to react while reading bsd:
also, if you’re interested in a post explaining how Mori isn’t a pedo, i wrote this analysis on twt. OR you can read this document that one of my moots sent me (remember: analyzing a character does NOT mean you condone any actions they may or may not commit!)
A detail that I always found curious in bsd is how in fifteen Dazai needs to consciously activate his ability, but in the current time of the story he doesn't. At first I just thought Dazai had trained his own ability to the point where he could keep it active all the time, but Dazai's ability doesn't really seem very important to his work in the mafia, because we only see him using No Longer Human a few times during the light novels that take place during the time he was in the Port Mafia, so I don't believe this was something trained by Dazai, but rather the effect that All Men Are Equal has on him.
We know that Fukuzawa's ability is a suppression ability that influences the abilities of ADA members, allowing the agents themselves to adjust and control their powers, so it makes sense that joining after the ADA, Dazai made No Longer Human always be activated, so he couldn't be affected by abilities attacks even if he was caught by surprise.
The fact that the agents themselves can adjust their abilities with the help of All Men Are Equall made me think about the other ADA members, and how they are affected by Fukuzawa's ability. In Yosano's flashback, it's never said that she can only heal people with fatal wounds, and when Yosano refuses to heal Tachihara's brother (who Mori says is not seriously injured) she says that she doesn't want to heal him, not that she can't, so I believe that after everything Yosano went through in the war and with Mori, she herself chose to only be able to heal people who were almost dying, so she doesn't feel like she was reducing the value of the lives of those she heals, and so that others detectives of the agency understand the value that their lives and wounds have, and don't end up like the soldiers in war.
In Kenji's fight against Tetchou, we have a flashback of a conversation between Kunikida and Atsushi, and Kunikida says that Kenji's ability is driven by his anger, the angrier he gets, the more powerful he will be, however, his hunger can calm him, and I wonder if that might have something to do with Fukuzawa's skill. Kenji is a very calm person, and Kunikida says that this prevents his monstrous strength from coming out, so creating a way to calm him down so that his ability doesn't go out of control may have been Kenji's own choice when he joined the agency.
Kunikida only using his ability in his notebook of ideals may also have been his own choice. We know how connected to his ideals Kunikida is, and he says that all of his future and ideals are written in that notebook, so it makes sense that he would want his ability, an important part of his life, to be in his notebook too. On the other hand, All Men Are Equal could be the reason why Kunikida can only create objects the size of his notebook, but I can't see a specific reason for this choice.
I don't see many ways in which Fukuzawa's ability can affect Tanizaki's Light Snow, other than limiting the area in which he can use his ability. We know that Tanizaki can be very aggressive if provoked, so the fact that his ability can only be used at a short or medium range may be to prevent him from doing more damage than necessary when angered.
I believe all of these assumptions make a lot of sense, based on what we've seen of the influence of Fukuzawa's ability on Atsushi (forbiding him from fully transforming into a tiger, and from losing his mind while using his ability) and Kyouka (allowing her to control Demon Snow without her phone), and I really hope this topic is explored at some point during the manga.
Someone please give Atsushi a break, because he won't be okay after all of this.
Like, you know a chapter isn't going to be good when these are the first panels
As expected, that Tanizaki really was a illusion of his ability, which he apparently activated when Kunikida was attacked by the divine being last chapter.
Even though this is a really popular theory in the fandom i didn't expect it to be real (i always thought they were weird due to some childhood trauma or something like that), nor that it would be revealed at a time like this, but is good to know that they weren't actually incestuous.
The Tanizaki siblings have always been characters that intrigued me, and i really hope their story can be explored further after the end of this arc. Apparently, not even Naomi herself knows about her own origin, considering that Tanizaki wrote a note about it and left it well hidden, and now he asked Atsushi to pick it up and, from what the manga implied, give it to Naomi, so she could knew about his family in case he died there. Which makes me wonder how important or dangerous her real family might be, and that maybe that's the reason why Tanizaki has always been so overprotective of her, along with his somewhat violent personality.
I haven't read The Makioka Sisters and Naomi, so I won't comment too much because I'll end up saying something that doesn't make any sense at all.
I REFUSE TO COMMENT ABOUT HIS DEATH. No, no, no, i won't talk about it.
I know that these death will probably be undone, and that they are happening more to show how a real battlefield is, even with ability users, to make Atsushi feel completely alone again, until Akutagawa finally arrive and the two fight against Ame-no-gozen, but it doesn't change the fact that characters i like a lot are being turned into BUBBLES AND EATEN BY THIS ELDRITCH GOD!!
We got Kenji and Tetchou back but at what cost.
Kenji is just so happy to be able to help his friends. He doesn't even care if he's going to die, because Atsushi is going to live, and that's enough for him. He tells Atsushi to move on while he dies, beacuse he knew Atsushi needed to go somewhere safe!! THIS IS A FOURTEEN YEAR OLD TEENAGER, HE SHOULD BE AT SCHOOL, NOT AT WAR!!
And Atsushi is so desesperate due to the fear of the divine being and the pain of seeing his friends diyng in front of him that i want to give him a hug.
Literally the only good thing in this chapter was finding out that Lucy and Kyouka are fine, traped, but fine. At least they're not dead.
THE AUDACITY.
YOU JUST KILLED THREE OF HIS FRIENDS, OF COURSE HE'S NOT ALRIGHT??
Leaving the negative feelings aside, we FINALLY had an interaction between Fyodor and Atsushi! If we don't have explanations about Atsushi's past and powers in the next chapters I'm going to go crazy. I know this will be traumatic for Atsushi, but Fyodor knows more about his powers than Atsushi himself, and I think it's time we know more about him, especially the connection between him and the book.
Francis final protocol better be taking Lovecraft out of the fucking ocean and send him and Steinbeck to this damn airport because I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE

I love my kunikida/ango cards and enjoy my dazai cards and ginger boi :3
My opinion: Yukio Mishima doesn't fit into the "Dai-Nippon Gothic" aesthetic. Mishima's writing is suffused by sunlight and healthy, powerful bodies, symbolic opposites of what "gothic" makes us feel. Mishima's writing is the sea under blue skies and the Ise Grand Shrine. Gothic is disease, frail bodies, lightless spaces.
The difference is that Mishima was actually a fascist and believed it was beautiful, while the Dai-Nippon gothic aesthetic uses imperialist imagery as a form of grotesque violence, mixed up with disease and perversion. Mishima's view on death can shade into this but there's a disconnect because in the gothic aesthetic, it's an outsider's perspective on fascism. Fascism as excessive violence, extravagant criminality, a heterotopia where everyday morality is reversed.
It would be wrong to reduce "Dai-Nippon Gothic" to the restrictive label 'antifascist' but I don't think real fascism can mix coherently with the aesthetic.
Writers who the "Dai-Nippon" aesthetic would do well to appropriate --- Ranpo, Yumeno Kyūsaku, maybe Izumi Kyōka, definitely much of the work of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki.
Of course, recontextualized images of Mishima can be appropriated but it's good to remember they're being twisted away from their original meaning
Evillious ❤ my favourite is Capriccio Farce
Interesting: in the title of Capriccio Farce, the word being translated as 'farce' is 茶番 "Chaban" which referred originally to a specific kind of popular theatrical entertainment. The author Jun'ichirō Tanizaki witnessed these performances as a child, and described them in his writing as being very violent, with content taken from true crime cases or military history. They were performed at a Shinto shrine in his neighbourhood. However, it's possible that only the specific Chaban troupe Tanizaki saw performing had this particular, violent aesthetic.
i kinda forgot i had this app 😭, but i’m about to art dump‼️‼️, warning i jump fandoms a lot

Fyodor you can't do this. They'd let you because you're gorgeous!
childhood friends- I genuinely feel bad for Fukuzawa
I shouldn't need to say it.
'let's put the randomness shit in the manga, but don't forget to make the chillest old man sad!' I hate seeing him so sad.
I stopped being upset over Fukuzawa to admire how gorgeous he is-
Our Main Character is back!
TANIZAKI!
I know there's some kind of hate for children and I'll laugh at the all the explosion edits and pictures, but I hate how she looks so tired.
I read the chapter 116 at 4am on July 4! A lot of emotions and confusion.
Is there any canon information on the Tanizaki's past except that they act weird? Is something said in the light novels or something? If not, if they aren't more characters than before in the upcoming chapters or whatever, then I might let my curiosity get to me
So many things to say regarding the end of this arc of Bungou Stray Dogs but this is what I want to share the most, because I have been saving this for months
Don't forget, the ride is not over ...
I didn't the anime was going to overtake the manga, I was so surprised but oh boy what a ride to get here, so much pain
