So thinking about NaNoWriMo stuff, I think I know what I want to write.

I'm going to write a novel about a girl with a very silly name (Jane Dogfood) who starts a mess of a podcast where she interviews the people around her about their life experiences and discovers who she is as she explores how she does/doesn't relate to the people she interviews.

While it is a coming of age story, a lot of focus will be developing these characters and exploring their life experiences, possibly in a "story within a story" sort of way

I have a story I want to write for NaNoWriMo and a character I have in mind would need to be handled with care.

The character in question is a 2nd generation immigrant from a pair of Filipino parents who's relationship with his mother is tenuous at best because of a language barrier. He is named Luis. The idea in my head is that Luis' father wanted him to assimilate to Western norms in the hope that he would have a better/easier time, and so he never really let Luis learn Filipino, and Luis' mother's grasp of English is fairly weak overall. Luis is also a high school student living in Vegas, going to a magnet school for computer engineering/tech stuff and he's also being the sound engineer person for a podcast with his childhood friend, Jane.

Before I go any further with this, I was wondering if there were any POC 2nd generation immigrants I could consult.

Anyway, my DMs are open

I totally forgot nanowrimo was a thing until write this moment but I kinda want to try it.

Also, I've decided to let myself make "bad" art and write "bad" things in the hopes that telling myself it's okay if what I write/draw/make is bad because until very recently I've been getting so caught up on making sure the things I do are "good" that I just haven't been letting myself do any of the things I like doing.

So yeah, I'm thinking I might write a bad novel for nanowrimo for funsies

Some Covers Of My Nano Project I Threw Together In Canva! Thought It Would Be Fun To Try And Get A Rough

Some covers of my nano project I threw together in canva! Thought it would be fun to try and get a rough idea for some of the visual language and ideas that might make their way onto an actual Raven's Rock cover, and then the newspaper one was mostly just for fun. Although I do like the idea of eventually getting something more landscape-y, like in that first pic.

Summary:

Raven's Rock is a small mining town in the Barren. It's strange, and quiet, and kind, and the people there lead strange, quiet, kind lives.

Then, they dig too deep, they strike something new, and days later their mines explode. The people of Raven's Rock no longer know quiet and kind, it is all strange and stranger.

Emanuel Rye is the sheriff of Raven's Rock. He listens to the wind like it has something to say, and he'll fix his town or die trying.

Ramona buried her sister yesterday, and she spends her free time sitting over a haunted grave. She's going to fix things, and she'll break this town trying.

Since it's November 1...thought I would reblog this :D

Hello!

Do you enjoy writing? What about talking with other writers? Are you looking for someone to read through your work, help out where they can? How about participate in world building exercises and character building prompts?

Well, I might have just the place for you.

Consider joining The Writing Desk. It's an 18+ writing discord server that will hopefully help you and others find people to cheer them on while working towards your goals.

Whether you write fanfiction, historical romance, medieval fantasy, nonfiction works, or academic papers you should be able to find your place here.

The server itself has sort of a dark academia aesthetic. We have four 'dorms' that might have something to do with points later on. They are:

• Gargoyle • Harpy • Unicorn • Wyvern

Some things included in the server are things like:

• Sprinting (both shorter and longer ones) • NSFW channel that is OPT-IN ONLY • A place for resources • Some non-writing channels for fun :)

There might be some events at times! Though you don't have to participate in those.

If this sounds good to you, The Writing Desk is here for you. Just follow the link. :)

Oh so it's classist and ableist to be against generative AI in creative writing? Nanowrimo is really out here implying that poor and disabled people can't be good writers without plagiarism and theft, and that's beyond words disgusting. Especially since the very demographic that's being the most negatively effected by AI taking over job roles in the creative fields are people who rely on keeping those jobs in order to survive. I.e, financially vulnerable and disabled people.

So It Looks Like NaNoWriMo Are Happy To Have AI As Part Of Their Community. Miss Me With That Bullshit.

Not really, I’ll be writing but not 50K this time around. However, I’ve been part of the NaNo community since 2014—back when I was 14 if you can believe it, haha and it’s really motivating to connect with other writers during November. I’m looking forward to it!

who is doing nanowrimo this year? how prepared are we feeling?

Wip Intro: Yellow Houses

image

I should start by saying that this project is shelved. I’m currently too busy to devote it the time it deserves while juggling uni and another novel. Hopefully, I’ll pick it up one day in the future, but for now, let’s just let it age like a fine wine on a USB stick, shall we?

Genre: Lit-fic/mystery? Logline:  Ellen, an aspiring university journalist, finds an envelope in her mailbox filled with photographs of upper-class houses. When she visits these addresses she finds they’ve all been vandalized -- painted a neon, school-bus yellow. When the two vandals engage with her via a virtual chatroom to propose that she cover their ‘art project’ for the local newspaper, she must do her best to write a non-biased recollection of the conflicts that ensue. Literal Logline: A bunch of young hipsters create pretentious art and go on tangents about eating the rich. Also, there is a creepy/psychopathic mayor candidate always wearing a signature yellow jacket and tie having an affair with Ellen’s mom! Fun!

image

Setting: Takes place in a small, fictional town in British Columbia. But a lot of scenes also take place in a chatroom, with virtual urban cities like Tokyo, New York and more.

Excerpt from the chatroom scene! TW/NSFW warning: mild sexuality. Also I haven’t line edited much yet, oops!

My baby pink VR headset landed me 2050, Chinatown; a street puddled with neon lights swimming in oily water, reflecting a Tetris stack of knockoff Balenciaga retailers. A couple Hello Kitty shaped arcade machines silhouetted a bar window, casting a pink and blue grid over my friends, who caught sight of me and waved. In only 330 hours, 20 minutes, 12 seconds, I’d come to know them better than their own families. If I hovered over their bodies, too creamy and poreless to be truly photorealistic, a timer would reveal when we’d clicked accept, invited eachother into our second lives.

Cassie’s heart shaped face grinned, her bejeweled teeth blue in the ink of store lights. She tossed her metal bat up high, and caught it on her index finger, balancing it there. Jada’s newly installed robo arms were translucent plastic. There were wires tangled inside.

Across the plaza, next to some motorcycles collapsed like dominos, a tall woman with a black veil over her face dragged a leash with a crawling half naked man in a bunny mask on the end of it, shuffling clumsily to keep up with her long strides. When she greeted us with nod, Jada let out a squeak before muting her microphone to safely burst into giggles.

image

“So many weirdos tonight,” Cassie said lowly, staring at the slave’s bony butt disappear around the boba shack. “Alors.” Her hands came together in a prayer. “Matching tattoos. Glowing ones, from the new update. And don’t even think about saying no, I have enough coins for all of us. You’ve got no excuse whatsoever.” She linked her arm through mine and Jada slung her robo arm over my shoulder and they steered me across the street. A group of white-haired teenagers, teardrop wings trailing along their bare feet drifted past us at the traffic lights, which only existed to flash ads for fast food chains or reduced phone plans at the pedestrians. One of them poked out her tongue at me. Pastel blue and pierced with a tiny metal seahorse.

I'm Getting Ready For NaNoWriMo. I've Never Been More Unprepared In My Life. Hopefully These Two Can

I'm getting ready for NaNoWriMo. I've never been more unprepared in my life. Hopefully these two can drag me through November.

Do you have any tips for doing nanowrimo for the first time? Or any tips in general?

I do actually. Kind of a lot of tips. But when I have a lot of things to say about something that people would need to take action on, I like to do bullet points to organize the information so it’s easier to digest.

So.

Bullet point time.

Start now. No I don’t mean starting the story. That’s the challenge, to write all the new words in November. I mean, start THINKING about your story. Start planning. Start brainstorming. Start character development. Start backstory. Start researching. Start your writing habit. Because writing at that level take training. You have to get INTO it. It’s far too hard to start writing a novel cold if you’re not used to writing.

Make An Outline. Okay. This is a choice. Not everyone likes outlines. In nanowrimo, we say there are two types; Planners who outline their novel and Pantsers who write by the seat of their pants. This can also be called “intuitive writers.” I think there’s a third, a combo of the two. Plantsers. I like that word because not only is it a combo of pantser and planner, it also has the word “plant” in it. So you plant your garden in a plan and then let it grow however it wants, intuitively. That’s me. Anyway. If you don’t want to plan an outline because you’re a pantser, take notes on your story. Do character interviews, research back story, get excited about tropes you want to use, write short stories about the characters, take notes and make lists about ideas you have.

Start a vision board for your story. I use pinterest. Here is an example of my vision board for one of my nano novels that has already been through three drafts, so...years. I’m REALLY into pinterest do no be intimidated. I’ve been doing it a long time. Keep track of characters, settings, ideas, research, advice. It gets a different version of my brain working on my story.

Sign up at the nanowrimo site. Choose a title, a genre, a location. Plan to attend events if you can. Okay, quarantine, but maybe digital events, i don’t know what they’re doing yet I haven’t checked. Go to the forums and engage in conversations about writing. Ask questions. Answer some. Buy some merch. Read the advice. Get involved in the community. Don’t let the community take over your writing time, but before nanowrimo? Perfect time to get involved.

Make room in your life for writing: Writing is a commitment. You have to show up to the page. You have to sit down and write. And it more or less has to be everyday, unless you’re planning on bingeing on only certain days... which is possible but harder. Plan out regular times where you will write. Carve out a schedule. It can be the whole weekend or it can be fifteen minutes here and there throughout the day. I am proof that you can write a novel in stolen fifteen minute increments. It takes TIME to write. Oh hey, while we’re on the subject, find out how long it takes you to write. How much can you write in 15 minutes? 30 minutes? an hour? How many of those time chunks will you need to get the words down. Don’t assume you write faster than you do.

Set up your writing space. A room, a corner, a laptop on your bed, a cafe, a library, a journal. Whatever it is. Make sure you have what you need and it is reasonably organized so that you can not worry about it. ALSO, get snacks and drinks set up so you can feed your body while you write.

Tell people in your life that you will be doing this. I know that may be hard, but telling people that you are committed to this project means you are being held accountable for your goal. It’s not just a wish. The more real you make it, the more likely you’ll reach it. You want them to know that you’ll be taking time to do this. But also, support helps. If you have no one irl to support you, find groups on line, if you don’t know where to look. go look at the forums on nanowrimo.org. You can find forums for age range, life stage, interests, genre, whatever.

It turns out these are all suggestions for how to get nanowrimo going BEFORE nanowrimo. I do believe that this is important. You need to work out your writing muscles before november. This is one of the things that can help you succeed. But I have other hints for how to get it done done while you’re doing it. I’m afraid for simplicity’s sake, that needs to be another post.

If you want to do nanowrimo... which I do suggest even if it turns out not to work for you, it helps to start earlier. Like running a marathon, you need to train to be able to go the distance. There are lots of thing to do that can get you there. These are only some of them.

Oh okay. I have one more thing. I’ve been keeping writing boards over on pinterest. I have boards both to brainstorm my novels and for writing advice.

nanowrimo pinterest board story ideas pinterest board character ideas SFF ideas Villain ideas The Writer’s Life

Feel free to plunder and pillage my writing boards. Repin whatever you want. That’s what it’s there for as well as my own inspiration.

All my writing boards start with “to write” or most of them do. There is “the writing life” and “kids and writing.” I have a lot of boards and a lot of pins.

also check out my writing board @rosy-writes i think at some point I’ll return this blog to a writing blog, but maybe i’ll keep rosywrites for my writing advice or something.
