Animal Crossing x Fruits Basket
The Sohmas (Fruits Basket) as Birthstones Revised:
I decided to make this because to me “Fruits Basket” was the “Steven Universe” for me before I even watched the latter show. Tohru is kind of like Steven in a way, healing lost broken things/people with their kindness and loving nature. Tohru even has a dead mother and lives with 3 other people. That’s pretty much it, though.
One reason why I’m doing this is because I wanted to make a “Steven Universe” version of this anime since anime is definitely smiled upon in that show. So in my headcanon, the show in that universe will be called Fruit Salad (call me out if you can think of a better title). Instead of turning into animals when stressed or hugged by the opposite sex, they will turn into their true form as aliens from another galaxy. That’s pretty much all I got for now considering it’s just a headcanon of an anime within a cartoon show.
So here’s the list so far.
Hatsuharu – Onyx (fusion of Black Tourmaline and White Tourmaline)(Gem Placement: right hand and left hand)
Kisa – Cryolite (Gem Placement: stomach)
Momiji – Golden Topaz (Gem Placement: chest)
Hatori – Dravite Tourmaline (Gem Placement: left eye)
Ayame – Septaria (Gem Placement: front side of the neck)
Isuzu – Arfvedsonite (Gem Placement: nose)
Hiro – Carnelian (Gem Placement: forehead)
Ritsu – Rhodochrosite (Gem Placement: back)
Kureno – Stichtite (Gem Placement: stomach)
Shigure – Tourmilated Quartz (Gem Placement: backside of the neck)
Kagura – Variscite (Gem Placement: chest)
Yuki – Sodalite (Gem Placement: forehead)
Kyo – Bloodstone (because of his beads for is bracelet were from bones and some were dipped with blood.) (Gem Placement: left wrist)

I feel like Fruits Basket had a missed opportunity to write a great arc for Yuki instead of him ending up with Machi. And I LOVE Machi and their romance is really cute but I didn't feel satisfied with that ending for Yuki.
When I first watched Fruits Basket I was sure that Yuki was supposed to be queer-coded and his arc about self acceptance and love was him coming out of the closet.
The reason for that is because of the way Yuki is constantly presented and the way he reacts to other people.
Yuki always gets mad at Kyo for calling him "girly boy" or "pretty boy".
He tries to put up at tough persona to try to appear more masculine.
He has a fanclub with both girls AND boys crushing on him.
Whenever he "flirts" with Tohru it would come off as awkward (I know it's because he considers her as his mom figure but still!!! And yet he has some unspoken rizz when it comes to flirting with guys tho)
Even his dislike of Ayame and not wanting to be like him was kinda him not wanting to come out of the closet (Ayame also gets a last minute love interest to make him more hetero. I thought he was definitely not straight)
It just made sense to me this was going to be his arc. Especially since Fruits Basket is sooo good at depicting emotions. I thought Yuki's arc was him overcoming his hatred of that part of himself and essentially coming out of the darkness that Akito had made him live in.
When the Student council members were introduced I thought Kakeru was going to be both a foil AND a love interest for Yuki. They just had that dynamic and chemistry that made it seem like Kakeru would change Yuki and help him understand his true self and feelings. I thought Machi was the quiet/ weird side character that would have a similar role as Kimi (comedic).
Then the whole Machi x Yuki happened and I was proven wrong. I didn't hate it but....Kakeru and Yuki just had so much growth in their friendship, I couldn't help but ship them.
I would have been happy with even a Bi-Panic moment for Yuki with Kakeru and Machi (who are both half-siblings)
Yuki just had the perfect personality and backstory for a good coming out arc but it never came to be.
(Ps: I am NOT hating Machi and Yuki's relationship. It's just that Fruits Basket had many opportunities to have gay characters but didn't commit to it)
Me watching Fruits Basket:
What I thought it would be about: Oh it's a typical shoujo anime with two pretty boys falling in love with the main girl. I can watch it and be relaxed. And they turn into animals! Haha, fun.
What it was: Trauma, PTSD, Parental neglect, isolation, self loathing, self depreciation, depression, physical abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, guilt, regret, grief, loss, heartbreak.
Now I need therapy.
(PS: as a girl who loves Girly media and Shoujo manga. I am so happy that this is a Shoujo that subverts a lot of people's expectations and makes you understand that Shoujo/Josei are NOT all the same as well as depict such a good story about familial trauma which is something we don't usually get.
I wish we could get more Shoujo/Josei anime each season 🥲)

1. Akito sohma
I don’t know the first episode I saw her I was like is this love? WTF MA’AM LOOK AT ME. I’m still salty she left me for Shigure. Season 3 fucked me up bad I love the Kyoru and Yumachi moments a lot but seeing Shigure meaning a manipulative bitch has me wanting to slap him.
2. Shen jiu (not shen yuan)
mf’s backstory has me crying tearing up print outs of Yue Qingyuan because STUPID QI-GE YOU DON’T HAVE 2 BRAIN CELLS DO YOU? I do not take criticism for kinning him go read his back story he only had qi-ge left in his life and YQY didn’t have the balls to come thru and tell him. I will forever hate Mu QingFang because bitch delivered medicine late to Qing Jing purposefully. In general I hate all the Peak Lords except SJ (LQG is still funny at times so kudos for that) because they ratted him out ヽ( `д´*)ノ.
3. Nie Huaisang
is it even a surprise this man is gorgeous af and bruh the amount of grief the resonated from him when NMJ died was enough to make me read and write canon-divergent fanfics where NMJ didn’t die and NHS didn’t have to suffer. Bro the fact that he revived Wei Ying surprised me and the bird scene the symbolism bro...... and yes he has a fan I have a thing for men/women with fans and green eyes. Don’t lie Nie Huaisang had us all fooled.
4. Zero Kiryu
ever had a crush that just doesn’t seem to leave you yea that’s what happened to me. And yes I still re-watched vampire knight twice this year because nostalgia and I was bored. Big mistake. I was contantly pointing at the tv either crying or cursing out Yuki because bitch who leaves THE perfect man and goes to your incest crazy brother. Bruh and Zero still loved Yuki like bro.... SHE HAD BOTH THEIR KIDS (mind you I love their daughters especially Ren because awooga she gorgeous and is exactly like her father). So yes I have a lot of bad blood with vampire knight’s ending my mans died and that piece of shit still lived what you expect.
5. Seth (Ennead)
SEASON 2 IS HERE WOOH AND IN THE FIRST CHAPTER WE SEE SETH BEING THE SAVAGE HE IS. Anyways as the last 4 Seth has well a lot of trauma. My guy is too beautiful to exist so he got well........ Anyways great character development ISIS AND OSIRIS SUCK MAKE THEM UNEXIST. And would you look at that he got Zeus on his simp line too. Seth might start out as a shitty abusive character at first but trust me you’ll learn to love him soon enough. His coping mechanisms aren’t well working anymore and Anubis is hating him. He’s a great father and husband no matter what.
