It seemed like the writers were being intentionally vague about why Egalt hated humans -- "that time" is referenced as what caused Egalt's disdain for them, but what "that time" was is never elaborated on. I assumed that this was to avoid spoiling something but after seeing these tweets:

it seems like there's not gonna be an in-show explanation, otherwise Doc would (probably) have answered "No Spoilers." Still technically possible we get something, but it seems more likely that somebody (or multiple people) was just mean and they will remain unnamed.

Hes still “there” but hes not, hes a completely new man, but not the man who loves lloyd. Maybe hes even learning to be good again, but hes still not lloyds father. He could be a hero, but in the end hes not lloyds father.
