The mere fact that a lot of women found out for the first time that there was a woman in Mission Control was a very big deal. I thought it was important that people understand that women can do these jobs—going into science, going into technology.
Frances ‘Poppy’ Northcutt
Northcutt was the first woman engineer to work as a flight controller on the Apollo program. Her team designed the “return-to-Earth” trajectory of Apollo 8 and wrote the program used to compute the maneuvers to safely return Apollo 13. The sexism Northcutt faced as one of the few women engineers at NASA led her to become increasingly involved in the women’s liberation movement. As an activist and lawyer, she has advocated for women’s rights for fifty years.

I'm throwing a random fact but a very significant one!!
Looks like Mike is thinking 'bout the space fandom.
I know, you need a little shy Neil.
This is just a sketch. Not ready yet.
With all my love, Mr. Collins!
Let me introduce you to Michael “Baby Face” Collins!
Michael Collins’s 1946 St. Albans football portrait.
Young Neil! At the time, he was in the Mississippi Smugglers jazz quartet.

Silence : wtf 🗿
Nobody: silence
No one: literally nothing
Me: yeah but can you name the Apollo 11 command module pilot
Neil Armstrong playing ukulele while in quarantine immediately after Apollo 11 returned to Earth, July 1969
Some of my favorite parts of “Apollo 11″ were these little (way too short) snippets so I thought I’d gif some of them :)
I still can’t stop thinking about this picture
Margaret Hamilton is a computer scientist and mathematician. She was the lead software engineer for Project Apollo. Her work prevented an abort of the Apollo 11 moon landing. She’s also credited for coining the term “software engineer."
50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing - July 20th, 1969
Apollo 11 was launched on a Saturn V rocket from the Kennedy Space Center on July 16th, 1969 carrying Commander Neil Armstrong, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins. Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the surface of the moon when the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Nearly a day later the men rejoined Collins in the command module Columbia, held in lunar orbit, and set a trajectory back to Earth. After over eight days in space Apollo 11 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24th.
The black and white images of the first lunar landing were received and broadcast live to at least 600 million people on Earth, around a fifth of the total population, a viewership record at the time. Within the USA, 94% of American televisions tuned in to the broadcast.
Today is the 55th anniversary!
