“During One Field Exercise, Lovell Suddenly Pretended To Be Overcome With Emotion Over Geology And

“During one field exercise, Lovell suddenly pretended to be overcome with emotion over geology and the great outdoors. He placed a mountain lily behind his ear, clasped his rock hammer to his breast, and managed a most noble expression.” -Dr. Elbert A. King, Moon Trip

White: Um, excuse me?

Young: (Peeps around corner) Heh heh heh!

Revisiting those super-awkward, semi-escandaloso photos of John and his wife, in bed, from LIFE in 1963. I sort of can’t believe these were taken, because that seems racy for the time, even though John apparently wore all of his clothes to bed.

Barbara Young: Hon, what are you reading?

John Young: Now don’t you worry that purty l’il head of yours. Go put on some lipstick or somethin’. Heh heh heh!

It Is Cold Outside. If You’re In The United States. You’re Likely Experiencing Near Record-low Temperatures

It is cold outside. If you’re in the United States. you’re likely experiencing near record-low temperatures and wind chills right now. Since you’ll likely be stuck inside for a few days, we have provided a handy guide of fun activities to do indoors:

1) Make pancakes

2) Create an elaborate exercise routine with a towel

3) Make newspaper hats, for yourself and for your pets

4) Play an Extreme round of Jenga

5) Finally teach yourself the chords to “Pour Some Sugar On Me”

6) And, of course, hang out with your puppy and cat.

Jim Lovell: “Just to be confined in there like a sardine in a can, that was a real trial. And, of course, you’re sitting right next to your companion, and for two weeks, being with Frank Borman… Two weeks being with Frank Borman any place was a real challenge. *laughs*”

Lovell: “Frank had a book called ‘Roughing it’ which we tried to read. We also sang to each other.”

Frank Borman: “Nat King Cole, at that time, had a very popular song: ‘Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone’.”

Lovell: “*singing* Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone, let’s pretend that you and I are all alone.”

Borman: “That got on our minds and we sang that damn song for two weeks. *laughs*”

Lovell, laughing: “We still sing it, occasionally.”

Space Cowboy. Gemini 4 Astronaut Ed White Dons The Hat As Commander Jim McDivitt Looks As Do G4 Backup

Space cowboy. Gemini 4 astronaut Ed White dons the hat as Commander Jim McDivitt looks as do G4 backup crew Frank Borman & Jim Lovell. It was the first spaceflight for all involved. Ed White wanted to stay out longer than the 20 minutes he spent on his historic 1965 spacewalk & used the opportunity of taking photos as an excuse to do so. However, McDivitt reminded him of time constraints & White returned. He called it, ‘the saddest moment of my life’ as he re-entered the Gemini capsule. He became the first American to perform an EVA (spacewalk) on the mission.

Astronaut Group 2 Goes For A Swim, 1963. From The Bottom: Frank Borman, Ed White, Tom Stafford, Pete

Astronaut Group 2 goes for a swim, 1963. From the bottom: Frank Borman, Ed White, Tom Stafford, Pete Conrad, John Young (I think).

I stand corrected regarding Young’s attire: he’s at least 93% covered only 99% of the time. What’s his deal with the nevernude business, anyway? All the other astronauts run around half-dressed like little kids at bathtime.

FINALLY Found An HQ Version Of This Photo, I’ve Been Searching For Ages! All Of The Mercury And New

FINALLY found an HQ version of this photo, I’ve been searching for ages! All of the Mercury and New Nine astronauts (with instructors) at survival training in Panama, June 1963.

Standing, from left to right: Wally Schirra, Neil Armstrong, Gordo Cooper, Deke Slayton, Tom Stafford, Jim Lovell, John Young, John Glenn (mostly hidden behind Pete), Pete Conrad, Ed White, Gus Grissom, Alan Shepard, Scott Carpenter, Jim McDivitt, Frank Borman, and Elliot See.

I love love love this photo! Must’ve been on the last day of training–everyone looks adequately filthy (except Ed, who, as usual, looks like a model). Even Frank is smiling! And Gus… well, Gus is being his typical mischievous self ;)
