It's probably obvious if you've seen any of my posts, but I freaking love Jason Todd. He is my comfort character, and I would die for him.
He is such a deep and complex character. Has he done bad things? Yes, very much so. But he is protective of kids.
He's trying to help in the only way he thinks will work. Bruce has been doing his thing for so long, and yet Gotham is still the crime capital of the world. Jason takes out some of the top drug dealers in two hours, taking control of the drug trade.
I just love this man so much!
He also looks like he gives amazing hugs. I'm so tiny compared to him that I'd be absolutely engulfed in the hug, and I'd be so damn happy. He needs hugs, and so do I, so it's a win-win.
LIKE LOOK AT HOW BIG HE IS!!!
Kim Rok-Soo...? That is so him, don't ask me why
When the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger and the mask slips, it's great.
But when the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger, and the mask DOESN'T slip.
Because they understand they need to be calm and unflappable now more than ever; if it protects them, it will certainly protect the person they care about. So their voice doesn't waver, their hands don't shake. They don't panic. From the outside looking in, they're as calm as could be. They handle it.
But after it's over-when the person they care about is safe, and the unflappable character is alone-they completely shatter. Gasping breaths, sobs, barely holding it together because someone they love almost DIED, and it was far, far too close for comfort.
(Optional: Character that they care about finds them in this state and comforts them.)
Ok but Gilbert is so pretty???? He's super pretty and I'm actually pissed we never get much of him! Has he ever even talked!?? Damn it I need him to have more action please he's so freaking beautiful!
Cale has so much trauma that the only way his allies can truly help him is if they ignore him when he tries to stop them.
A hardened war-veteran who has self-sacrificing issues and a deep desire to protect everyone he can regardless of consequences? No problem, just ignore everything stupid he says.
Cale:wait no I need to go fight
Allies: shhhh no you don’t, take a nap, we will handle it
Cale:but-
Allies: no buts. It’ll all be okay
Cale:*ptsd intensifies*
Literally when the sealed gods temple started to create the equivalent of a nuclear bomb, Cale was like “wow, good thing I stabbed myself earlier and I feel GREAT so I’m going to try to block this with my shield that gives me major backlash” and everyone else just had to be like “GUYS HES DOING IT AGAIN QUICK PULL OUT THE SHIELDS”
And then Cale was like “why is everyone doing this? I’ll be fine?” And they’re all like “GET ALL SHARP OBJECTS AWAY FROM HIM- FUCK WHY IS HE DOING THIS-? HE JUST STABBED HIMSELF HAS HE NOT DONE ENOUGH???”
And Cale is like “guys, I promise I can help” and he’s like a baby who’s just silverware privileges revoked because a fork and an outlet got involved so everyone is like “anyone hear anything? Nope didn’t think so. Cale go sit in the corner”
And honestly they’re not wrong for it-
Later edit;
Cale:I am such a bad person. I use everyone around me for my own benefit, so I don’t know why you guys are still here
Allies:yes, yes, of course Cale-nim. Now let’s get you to bed before your sense of self-responsibility shows up
Instead of being on a government list, he has a government list.
He also has the phone number of all the powerful and famous people, he thinks is a business relationship but they call at least once a month to hang out. Or what KRS describes as "catching up on plans and creating new strategies".
Judging by his track record as Cale Henituse, I wholeheartedly believe Kim Roksoo destroyed a few guilds and came very close to (if not succeeded in) overthrowing the government of at least one of the countries on earth.
Jason waking up in Gotham harbor and saying "well, is not the weirdest place I ever woke up"
After Red Hood stopped killing and someone leaked footage hinting that he's the second Robin, he expected to fight for every morsel of territory, for everybody to desert him and the murder attempts to triple.
And, well. It's not like he doesn't find himself in a rigged warehouse on Monday, walking off that one explosion with singes on his back. It's not like on Wednesday, a bullet pierces through a hole in his armour and he's losing half his blood in an alley. And sure, someone takes advantage of him throwing his helmet away on Friday (he was out of grenades and needed a bigger bomb) to fear gass him, but it's fine, he can function normally under fear gass nowadays.
Except. Except nobody deserts him. By Monday, the attempts have completely stopped. He walks into a meeting with his men and sees his goons' hands won't stop shaking, and even his lieutenant won't look him in the eyes.
Jason is confused, and so are the other bats, but soon the rumours reach their ears: you can't go after the Red Hood, because no matter what you do, once you've targeted him it's over, like a dog with a bone, he'll get you eventually- no matter how you shoot or how many explosives you use. It doesn't matter that the Red Hood doesn't kill, because the Red Hood doesn't die.
Cale says he is a bad person, a selfish, stone cold bastard because he spent at least 10 years believing the words he heard on his team funeral and after it.
And he had nobody to say the opposite, nobody who knew him, who cared about him. To prove them wrong, to insist that they are the actual bastards without heart for saying that to a mourning person.
He was alone, terrified of getting close to people again, and thinking that the deaths of his family was all his fault. Of course he thinks he is a bad person.
For him, people that don't protect their family are trash, so he is the worst human being that ever put a foot on the planet.
Jason and Jade met on some mission before Jason went back to Gotham, and they continued to sometimes meet up afterwards as well. Mostly on missions, again, but sometimes Jade would just come up at Jason when he's having breakfast or something and they would chat a little bit.
Perhaps they, in some way, felt like kindred spirits. Both on a mission that they feel like they need to do, even if it's not necessarily all that they want out of life, but they also don't know if they can live another type of life, either.
Anyway a few years in, there's a knock at the front door, and when Roy goes to open it, Jade is standing on the other side, in civilian clothes and with a very expensive pair of sunglasses on her eyes and even more expensive bag slung over her shoulder.
"Hi?" Roy says. "It's not like you to come knocking on my door like this."
"I'm not here for you", Jade says (though it's not unkindly).
Roy completely understands.
"Lian's at Ollie and Dinah's", he says. "I can call them-"
"I know, I will come visit her too", Jade says. "But right now I'm not here for her, either."
"Okay?" Roy is now officially out of the loop, it seems.
"I'm here for business", Jade says, very unhelpfully, and then masterfully steps around Roy and into the house. "Bird Boy!"
Jason makes a sound from the kitchen, and Jade marches in there. Roy follows her, and steps into the kitchen just in time to see Jason hand Jade a cup of tea, and for Jade to pull out something wrapped very tightly in plastic from her bag. It makes a very loud thump as it hits the table, and Roy realises very quickly that this is going to be a very long day.
Ohhh [fictional character with worse mental health than me] save meeeee from this cruel world.
