Holy shit this is useful
I have a problem. Lately I realized that before I start revising for an exam, I have this idea in my mind that I really need to learn material by heart, otherwise is not even worth studying. But then I start procrasinate, because this feels like so much hard work. And the result is me cramping up all the material a day before an exam. How can I change this mindset?
Hi there! I think the most important thing here is to change up the way you approach studying/learning. While it would be best to learn/know everything by heart, you have to keep in mind that you won’t be able to memorize everything. It’s inevitable, and it’s best not to get stuck on this kind of mindset. There will be things that you forget, and there will be things that are just harder to understand. But you have to remind yourself that no matter the results, what you learned was WORTH IT.
Learning isn’t 100% encompassed by school, grades, notes. It’s important to recognize that learning itself is a gift, and that despite not getting everything right, or learning all the material by heart, that you have indeed gained something.
Studying for an exam is reviewing what you have learned over the course of the class. Whether or not you know the material like the back of your hand, reviewing is going to be a lot of work. We think a good way to prevent low-motivation and procrastination is to look towards your goals. Why are you studying? To get good grades, to go to your dream school, because you like the subject, or simply because you want to learn? Set small, achievable goals and make timetables! These little things will go a long way in helping you improve your time management as well as brighten your view on studying :)
