basic ass question, but what kind of brushes do you use for your art? i particularly loved the painterly style on brienne's clothing in the latest piece.
I used a lot of the medium wash brush from this gouache set by Ittai Manero and I’m not sure where exactly I got them but a slightly edited version the opacity brush from this alcohol marker set which is one of my favs <3
hello!!! recently i’ve started reading asoiaf, in part bc i was so bewitched by your artwork! you’re really really talented! i love you depiction of the characters, i cannot imagine them any other way now.
what i wanted to ask is, what do you use to draw? (ipad, drawing pad X, etc.. i don’t know any names pf things actually im just saying words) if you tell me i would be very grateful, thank you!!
hello!! wow!! I am touched and I hope you enjoy the books as much as I have :)
currently I use an ipad pro and apple pencil with the procreate app! I hope that helps!

ppl keep talking about the hands on this one so I am going to let you in on a secret: I just took a picture of my own hands as reference. you, too, can do this to make your life easier… <3
The queen wore a high-collared black silk gown, with a hundred dark red rubies sewn into her bodice, covering her from neck to bosom. They were cut in the shape of teardrops, as if the queen were weeping blood.
hello! i was wondering where you found references for historical clothing?
hi! I mostly look for medieval russian costumes and illustrations! You can find some really beautiful (non-US) show costumes centered around that period on pinterest, as well as recreations and illustrations. Occasionally i’ll look at Ivan Bilibin’s works but that’s more so for patterns and general aesthetic than exact garments.
Hi! I really love your art and I'm getting into doing digital painting myself now. If it's not too much of a bother could you share some tips on your process, and what program + brushes you use? <3
thank you!! I would say my process is not that out of the ordinary but I’m happy to share :)
for the first sketch, I start REALLY loose. comically loose. this pass is just to get the general vibe and composition of the sketch. (going to be using jojen and meera as an example bc this file still has all parts of the process in tact).
then I start pulling LOTS of references and working from them. I start trying to get shapes down accurately enough that I have a solid base to work off. then I can clean them up for the final lines
the only part of my process that I think differs from most is that I’m really terrible with color, so one thing that I learned helps me is to do color comps. i’ll duplicate my line art and then shrink it down until it’s small enough that I can’t focus on details or precision too much and then try and work out color palettes. sometimes the first one works, and sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 recolors, but better for me to do these quick versions than go in blind and hate it at the end. (I unfortunately don’t usually save the ones I don’t use. I wish I could share some options I didn’t go with!) Then I can use my comp as a reference and it’s just a matter of getting the colors in cleanly!
As for programs, I use procreate on an ipad, but for years I used a $60 wacom tablet and clip studio paint that I got on sale. I really think it’s less about the program and more about what’s intuitive for the individual. unless someone tells you to use photoshop. that’s the devil speaking.
lastly here’s some brushes I use! the basics are both default brushes on procreate (maybe slightly altered, but not by much). I make my canvases on the smaller side to get the rough pixelated look from my sketch brush. for patterns, I pull from old illustrations or fabric! a lot of mine came from ivan biliban or similar illustrators. the stamp brushes are super easy to make and really make clothing look lovely imo :) pattern brushes are a little harder but they’re doable with tutorial help
I hope that helps!!
lol why are drawing men so feminine? your jon snow is literally indistinguishable from a girl, is there some kind of agenda here, or is it just your "style"?
you caught me it’s all part of my woke agenda
I’d been procrastinating drawing Jaime in kingsguard armor bc I was loathing figuring out how I was going to make full plate match the aesthetic I had been going for with other westerosi stuff, but I went back and listened to some of the chapters for inspiration and sansa describes the kg armor as scaled! I decided to lean fully into that instead of plate bc I thought it was more fun :)
Everytime you post new art i have to look through the old ones again and god!! I notice little details everytime and it's just so good. Anyways I hope you have a nice day
tysm!! that is very kind :) there are drawings I don’t like as much anymore but overall I have had sm fun drawing asoiaf stuff and there are a lot that i DO like which is a win for me 💪 and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of all there is to draw in the books
I know nothing about dnd but Sybille looks so cool!!! I really love her necklace and what I presume is a fox (?) tied by a rope as a charm on it? Does it relate to her faith? Also her outfit is gorgeous and her nose and eyes and face!!!!! Words cannot describe how much admiration I have for your work! You really inspire me to draw!
yes her necklace is a fox and yes it is related!
Her religious order worships the god of death, agriculture, and travel, and there’s typically one priest of the faith in every community to perform funeral rites (and usually farm as a day job). she, however, comes from a monastic temple of death so the symbolism is pretty straightforwardly related to that. foxes are pretty cunning creatures, but in the end no one can outsmart death.
and thank you!! that is so kind and I really appreciate it <3
I love your ASOIAF art, its so comforting to look at. would you ever draw Sansa and Lady? like them hugging or sleeping curled up together!!!!!
this is not quite what was asked of me, but hope it’s okay anyways!!
I feel like I rarely see Lady depicted as a pup which imo is a missed opportunity for big ole ears
