Just A Dream

synopsis; in your dreams, he is yours. in your nightmares, he isn’t. and in this life? who knows. (dabi/touya todoroki x fem!reader)

cw; talks of nightmares, slight angst, allusions to character death, minor portrayals of anxiety, suspicious behavior, one mention of endeavor, happy ending, quirkless reader (this is sort of a part two to in another life, can be read as a stand alone), dabi calls reader wisp (like a wisp of a flame).

the gaps in the blinds allow the sunlight to filter in, spreading across the otherwise dark room. your eyelids feel heavier than usual as you blink the sleep away, one hand moves across the bed, reaching for the familiar warmth of another body. there’s nobody there but the bed is still warm.

“miss me already?” his tone is teasing as you sit up and glance to the doorway. touya leans against the side, he’s shirtless with his arms crossed over his chest and his sweats riding low on his hips.

his face turns serious as he notices the tear tracks on your cheeks and makes his way to the bed.

“another nightmare?” he’s pulling your body into him while you nod and wrap yourself around him, he hums while rubbing your back.

“what was it this time?”

“you died after your birthday before i got to see you again and confess properly.”

“oh you mean when i’m awake to say it back.” his tone is back to teasing as he tries to lighten the mood by reminding you of the first time you confessed.

you laugh, shaking your head while shoving him away, he chuckles deeply while swiping away a stray tear.

“you promised you wouldn’t bring that up again.” you scold and he just laughs louder.

“oh c’mon baby you know i’m just teasing. gotta make sure my girl isn’t sad on this very special day.” the smile he wears brightens your mood instantly, though you’re left confused on what today is.

“special day? it’s only monday we don’t have plans do we?” you rack your brain, searching for answers. it’s not anyone’s birthday, not an anniversary or anything else. dabi senses your confusion and smiles brightly.

“it’s a surprise, we’re going to meet yumi and mom for breakfast first and then you three are going to have a girls day while i run some errands.” he explains before standing up and helping you off the bed.

“you get the bathroom all to yourself today since i already showered.” it’s only then that you notice his white hair is damp as it clings to his skin.

you smile and make your way to the restroom to start your day.

a while later you’re sitting at a table with rei, touya, and fuyumi. you’ve just finished breakfast and are discussing today’s plans.

“i have errands to run but you guys can have a spa day as long as y/n’s back before our dinner reservations.” dabi explains as fuyumi and rei smile brightly.

“did i miss a chapter? since when did we have dinner reservations?” you speak up, first breakfast and now this? you’re starting to get suspicious.

“don’t worry wisp, it’s a surprise.” touya’s fingers tighten around your thigh where they rest, he gives you a teasing smirk.

“yeah you’ve been saying that a lot,” you grumble and he only hums in response, winking at his mom and sister.

the four of you say your goodbyes and go your separate directions, fuyumi leading you to her car where you sit in the back and text keigo while she drives to the mall.

if anybody would know what was happening and tell you, it’d be him.

aside from calming your growing nerves about your boyfriend’s suspicious behavior, keigo offered no help.

it’s been a few hours since the girls' day began, you’ve gotten your nails done, shopped at a few different stores and had a light lunch.

fuyumi checks her phone far more than usual and coincidentally dabi will text you right after she pockets her phone.

it’s nearing five o’clock now and fuyumi is driving towards the apartment you share with touya.

“alright be honest with me, what does he have planned?” your voice comes out whiner than you wanted it to and you wince at the way it sounds.

“sweetheart everything is fine, just take a deep breath in and relax. he just wants to treat you to dinner.” rei’s soft motherly voice flits through the car and into your ears.

your shoulders sag as you breathe deeply, you don’t mean to be anxious, it’s just that your nerves are on edge from this morning's nightmare and truthfully you’re scared you’ll have to say goodbye.

when he was in the facility, you had dreams of another life with him, a different one where he never got hurt and life wasn’t cruel to him. a life quite like the one you’re living now, only without the monster that is touya’s father.

but ever since three years ago, you’ve had nightmares of dabi passing away in his sleep, just like he almost had that night. now you can’t shake the feeling that this might all be a dream.

one you’ll wake up from crying and in bed alone.

“are you okay? y/n?” the call of your name from fuyumi’s voice pulls you from your thoughts.

the cars been parked and both women are looking at you softly. you can feel the lone tear that began falling from your lash line.

“i’m fine, i think.” your voice betrays you as it cracks and you’re faced with two soft sympathetic smiles.

“he’s a strong man honey, he got better and he made it out. he’s here, alive and with us. it’s okay now,” rei reaches a hand out to grab yours, squeezing it tightly she meets your gaze.

you give a firm nod and squeeze her hand in return.

“you’re right, he’s strong.”

you continue reminding yourself of that fact all throughout your dinner with dabi as he fidgets nervously in his seat.

he’s strong.

you think as you watch a bead of sweat drip down his forehead and roll off the side of his face.

he’s strong.

his hand is on your thigh as he drives to an unknown destination. the windows down and a song playing on the radio.

he’s strong.

he took you to a park, the cherry blossoms in bloom as the night sky twinkled brightly with millions of burning stars.

he’s strong.

he keeps your body close, one hand warming your waist as he holds you. the other holds a box in his pocket, as he leads you down a barely lit path.

he’s strong.

he leads you to a secluded section, fairy lights decorate the nearby trees. the garden gazebo is decorated with strings that hold photos of the both of you throughout your lives together.

he’s strong.

your breath catches in your throat as you turn to see him on one knee, box in hand held open to face you.

he’s strong.

his hands shake as his palms grow clammy, the nerves making him sweat. and for once, his body runs cold as his eyes meet yours.

he’s strong.

“will you marry me or what?” his voice shakes as he tries to calm himself down, his usual gruffness nowhere to be found as you smile brightly at him.

he’s strong.

a flash of light pulls your eyes away momentarily to see your friends and family hiding in the bushes, keigo looks sheepish as touya glares at him.

he’s strong.

“yes.” he sighs as relief floods his entire body, before he chuckles deeply.

he’s strong.

his lips meet yours in a passionate kiss as he slips the ring onto your finger. a happy sob leaves you as your body melts into his, and he smiles.

he’s strong.

after years of dreaming of another life, one where dabi could be yours, and after years of nightmares where he never was.

and in this life?

your eyes flutter open and you smile as you feel dabi’s hair tickling the back of your neck.

“hmm morning.” your voice is cheery as he groans, the vibrations running down your arm when he places a kiss on your shoulder.

“what’s got you so cheerful this morning?” his voice is deep and groggy with sleep as he moves to hover over you, his cerulean eyes shining brightly.

“oh nothing, just a dream i had.” you smile and scrunch your nose when he kisses it, he hums.

“was it a good one?” he kisses both your cheeks and you laugh lightly.

“yeah, yeah it was.” he smiles at that and places a kiss on your forehead.

“what was it?” he holds himself above you now, legs tangled with yours and chests inches away from touching.

“just a dream.” he shakes his head with a sigh.

“fine then keep your secrets.” your giggle is cut off as he finally kisses you. lips molding together in a moment of tenderness and serenity.

“i love you wisp.”

“i love you touya.”

sometimes dreams really do come true,

because in this life,

touya,

he’s finally yours.
