many trans people have deadnames but some also have ghostnames. names you used during a temporary part of your journey and then left behind when they had served their purpose, or names you secretly wanted to be called at some point in your life but hesitated to make your own, or names that somehow felt familiar to you every time you heard them but just never became yours. names that linger around you in limbo.

a customer said “earl gay” instead of “earl grey” and my lizard brain reacted fast enough to say “that’s what they call me in England”
