Westerlund 1 This is Westerlund 1, one of the largest open clusters of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Open Clusters are stars that all formed at about the same time, all of which are about the same distance from Earth, most likely formed from a single dense molecular cloud which in this case has now dissipated due to the flaring up of so many stars.
