Hana watched as the Rockruff walked off, taking note of her simple request. For a moment they felt bad for the inconvenience they might’ve caused the pair asking for something off-menu to be made specifically for them, but the Greninja seemed more than delighted to oblige. They pulled out their phone and wallet, wanting to tip ahead of time for going out their way to make the dish; when they noticed the cooks’ sign faced towards them.

It’s not the first time they’ve been asked this question, they’ve answered it more times than they care to remember. Even so, each time, they’ve had a different answer. Admittedly, it’s something they haven’t thought about in a while, at least a few…months? Years?? Decades???. Being a species who’s longevity can last well over a millennia, it’s easy to forget how different it is for other mortals bound by the laws of their own mortality.

Time moves differently for those forced to stand still.

Taking out some money and settling back into their seat, they looked back at the Greninja with a melancholy smile.

To be honest, it used to. Growing up, they don’t really tell you how different you are from everyone else when you’ve always been surrounded by others just like you. You just learn to accept it and call it a blessing, I guess.

I hated it, and to be honest I still do. You’re not immortal, but compared to everyone else you may as well be. I used to make a point not making friends with anyone with too short a lifespan than mine, especially humans. The kid you saw last week could be an elder the next, and all the while you haven’t aged a day. It’s…terrifying.

Well, I’m not about to sour the mood more than it already is, but long story short is that you find reasons to make the ride better, ‘cause it’s gonna be a long one anyway, so might as well make it worth it.

Small Dad says that the doctor says that I have a extra tummy where food doesn’t go but everything else does and that’s where all my bug friends go. I don’t eat Big a lot because he’s too big especially after I eat a lotta food. But I ate this morning so it’s ok.

Also, this is Big. His name is Big because he’s big.

Oh My! The New Character Is So Cute! What’s Their Name?

The child doesn't seem interested in answering the question, instead walking away some distance before setting the beetle down and watching It crawl about.

Oh My! The New Character Is So Cute! What’s Their Name?

Maybe you should ask something specific?

The child seemed puzzled at the Swirlixs’ response, giving their head a tilt for a moment.

{ Previously… }

Why would it be smaller if I eat a lotta bugs? Should I eat more bugs???

They barely started to think about it when a slice of cheesecake was presented to them, it’s sweet aroma filling their nose and thoughts immediately. It smelled nothing like cheese, but still deliciously sweet and enticing. Leaning forward with their tongue sticking out, they give the treat a curious lick.

You could almost see the moment the sweet taste hit them like a truck, as in the next moment the dessert was gone in a whole bite, almost taking the limb along with it! You’re not entirely sure if they chewed at all with how fast it was eaten.

{ Previously… }

That was the best cake I’ve ever tasted ever.

Gimmie more? Please?? I want more!

Their eyes were wide and even more dazzling, their tail wagging a mile a minute as they pleaded with the swirlix.

Big is here so I’m not by myself. He’s like Megaro, but Megaro is bigger and isn’t as strong as Gojira. He’s the king of pokemonsters so he has to be super strong.

Are you a bat? You kinda look like a “Crow-Bat” but bigger…and black…

I heard Crowbats need a lotta blood all the time or they feel bad, are you here to drink my blood?

It kinda looks like fruit juice, but it doesn’t taste the same…it’s supposed to be important though so you can’t have mine, okay?

Maybe they have some at the grocery store…

Ask call!

Howdy! Reynard and Xavier are open for asks! They are characters belonging to my darling @pokitsune but I kinda hijacked 'em lmao.

Some hints I guess:

Ask Call!

Reynard

Who are you?

What's your relationship with Chai?

Why are you so awkward?

Why was the wish silly?

etc Idk I suck at making hints

Xavier (He will be annoyed/probably not answer if you're a guy.)

Why are you so mean to Reynard?

What's your relationship with Chai?

Why are you so aggressive?

What's your opinion on the wish?

etc you can ask him anything but good luck

Previously: Hana ordered a bowl of Kitsune Udon and Ray asked a rather deep question to which Hana responded with clarity. @pokitsune

Ray listens attentively. But, as Hana takes a pensive stop to think, his hands sneakily shifts to the x-transceiver behind the counter away from their view.

In front of Ray’s webbed hand is a holographic projection of a recipe for Kitsune Udon. Like most modern-day recipes, the preamble is… strange, to say the least. Something about a dead grandpa, a forklift accident, and finally, the instructions on how to make the udon.

Sounds easy enough...

His attention is brought back to Hana as they started to talk once more. Other than a slight twitch at the words "I hated it-", Ray gives Hana his full attention..

Hana ends their monologue with “Long story short is that you find reasons to make the ride better. ‘Cause it’s a long one anyway, so might as well make it worth it.” Ray is peering back at Hana as he leans forward on the counter.
Ray picks up the whiteboard and scribbles away, gingerly writing his message with care before showing it to Hana. It reads: I like your answer.

It wasn't long until Rio came back.

“Receipt’s in the bag,” Rio says as she barely fits into the frame. Ray is peering over the counter, eyeing her and her haul. “I’ll do some bookkeeping in the back,” Rio says to him as if to answer his stare.

She trots off, shooting a thoughtful glance over to Hana to see if her presence bothered them any longer. Nevertheless, she continues to do some "book keeping" away from Hana’s area–most likely to give them the reprieve from the cynophobia she was informed about.

After unpacking the groceries, Ray takes stock of what he has in front of him.

Ray crosses his arms. In front of him is a package of Udon noodles, a single scallion, a small jar of spice, a larger jar of spice, and a package of extra firm tofu.
Ray thinks to himself, thinking of the instructions he sped through while Hana was responding to his question. Three visualized options, long soaked Konbu, rolled-out dough for noodles, and fried urage are crossed out. Instead, they are replaced with a pot of boiling liquid, a package of udon noodles, and a picture of the tofu, respectively.

Hana has already humored him with a deep response to a heavy question, so to keep them waiting without food would just be rude. He’s going to have to work with what he’s got and take short cuts.

Pictured is a collage of Ray cooking. One one side of the picture is a long horizontal frame of a pot boiling on a stove. On the other side is a picture of Ray twice-frying tofu, cutting ingredients, and straining the noodles.

Short cuts or not, this was a delicate operation. Skipping the steps to soak the seaweed to boil it might risk a bitter and slimy stock if boiled too long. Take time too little to twice fry the tofu and you’ll end up with a sad addition of soggy tofu. He has to time it right…

Pictured is a bowl of kitsune udon, a noodle dish with thick wheat flour noodles submerged in a thin tasting broth surrounded with fishcake, twice fried tofu, and a small dash of green onion.

The broth shimmers with golden clarity. The noodles look like they are not too firm and not too soft. While there may be traces of some of the spice falling to the bottom of the bowl, it looks complete and carefully concocted.

A tasteful addition of the necessary toppings sit proudly on top. The Inari-Age looks like it's not typical of what you'd expect from Kitsune Udon, but reminiscent of the sweet and salty taste despite its hardened and crispy texture.

This is the type of a lunch that will have you ready to take on the afternoon without feeling too bloated.

By all accounts, Ray thinks he did a pretty good job. He’s quite proud of himself for this one.

I followed this recipe to do some research!

Previously: Hana Ordered A Bowl Of Kitsune Udon And Ray Asked A Rather Deep Question To Which Hana Responded

I gave myself the limitation of "ok there's a customer who needs their food asap." So 10-15 minutes max. Here's what I found:

The recipe is absolutely right in claiming that dashi powder isn't as good as homebrewed dashi. HOWEVER I live in a place where Japanese ingredients are hard to come by. I'm actually surprised I didn't find bonito flakes.

You can skip the soaking konbu part, but I hiiiighly recommend it. You'll end up with a broth that doesn't feel complete if you skip this part. Speaking of broth, udon noodles are also extremely filling--if you make a broth with it, it better not be heavy because you'll be a vegetable after you eat. But if you get all the ingredients right, you'll end up with a good meal that I totally forgot to take a picture of. Just imagine it's what I drew because that looks better anyway

I didn't read the instructions close enough--the inari-age is supposed to be a marinated/seasoned in dashi, soy sauce, and mirin. I just had bland tofu puffs... In my defense, there's a lot of Japanese terms thrown around and the recipe blog was un-intuitive to follow.

Granted, there's absolutely no way you can make inari-age in the span of 20 minutes, especially if you're making the tofu from scratch. One way to change that, however, would probably be in the process of combining the seasoning/marinating process with the frying process. I can't confirm this, I haven't tried it and I was getting too antsy to let this reply go unfinished.

While the Arcanine was talking, Star had decided to roll themselves up off of the ground, shaking off the dust and taking a moment to relocate their pet beetle Big before picking them up and letting it crawl on their back. They were honestly getting very bored of these random strangers talking to them and a little hungry as well, thinking they should probably head back home for a snack.

{ Previously… }

Wait.

A Stink bug? What stink bug? Where???

Confused, Starflower looked around, then looked back at the Arcanine for a moment and followed his gesture to Big, who at this point was resting in their fur.

{ Previously… }

“St—“

“STINK BUG?!”

It was as if a switch had been flicked in that moment. One would’ve thought Star had used Hyper Voice with how loud they suddenly barked at the Arcanine! Whipping their tiny body around and huffing at the dog, they continued their barking in full force.

{ Previously… }

“BIG ISNT A STINK BUG, YOU BIG POOP-HEAD! STINK BUGS BELONG TO THE “PEN-TOMATO” FAMILY! BIG IS A HERCULES BEETLE AND THEY BELONG IN THE “DYE-NASTY” FAMILY!!”

They honestly couldn’t believe the nerve this dog had. The bugs were clearly two different species! They don’t even look alike! Aren’t they an adult? They’re supposed to know everything!

{ Previously… }

“BESIDES, BIG DOESN’T SMELL LIKE YOU DO, STINKY! HE DIDN’T CALL YOU NAMES SO YOU BETTER SAY SORRY!!”

Nearby, Stars’ screeching hadn’t gone unnoticed, quickly catching the ear of the older Vulpix as they whipped around toward the sound.

{ Previously… }

“Oh gods—“

Taking off towards the loud display, they clumsily burst through the brush and landed into the scene at a short distance, immediately focusing on the tiny kit in the middle of their tantrum apart from the dog sitting before them.

“STAR!!”

( @ Ivy ) Hmm…I guess I’ll ask the most obvious question. Shapeshifting is a natural ability for me, but for you it looks like it involves some extra work and even multiple sources, like a humans’ soul. Were you human in a past life, or did you find one on your own? Is the old form of this “soul” the form you take when you change shape or did you mold it into your preferred appearance? - Hana

"It's not one I happened to pick and choose, It was an impulsive choice I made when I was younger."

"I would never disrespect my old form. Her form... I only added myself to it over the years. Even so. I can't 'mold' it. I just change my appearance. As any human would."

"But, It's still mine and It's still me. I just can't have it all of the time now. At least not forever, as much as I do miss it, being human all the time, I cheated fated, and this is my punishment. So I will accept it, Be as it may." Ivy softly sighed, despite her emotionless exterior she seemed almost... Sad? Though it didn't show for long.

-> Ivy doesn't seem like she wants to talk about it anymore... at least for right now. -> Any questions related will be set aside for later. -> Ivy's profile has been updated.
