The room was lush with peonies. They sprouted everywhere like mushrooms. Rosy and citrusy, petal-like notes that tickled your nostrils. The flowers you appraised with indifferent eyes at the florist’s that day. They didn’t dance like they would in a meadow but sat prim and proper in their place like women used to do, to be plucked and owned by a touch inferior to the sun. 

Flowers are beautiful but like many beautiful things, they wither just like the eye that looks upon it. Hence, your captor’s doe eyes and cherry-pink lips do not deter you. Yes, he was easier on the eyes. It really made things much easier for you.

“Pink peonies symbolise love at first sight,” your friend had said. She was the florist, the only reason why you were standing in the shop of flowers that day. 

You gazed upon the fresh flower and its unbridled petals. “No wonder it’s so overwhelming,” you smiled. “So much happening at once, it’s difficult to pinpoint that it’s not love at all.” 

Your friend had rolled her eyes, knowing very well that you didn’t believe in love at first sight. 

But your captor certainly did.

A vanity table littered with your holy grail of beauty products. The spines of your beloved books stood tall on mahogany shelves.
