POLICAL ACTION FOR SUDAN

A recap of a virtual event hosted by Nas Al Sudan and the Sudanese Diaspora Network featuring Shayna Lewis and Aiyha Abdelbagi (both joining in their personal capacities)

ASKS RELATED TO POLICY
WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC ASKS FOR SUDAN?
• Need to call for a committed ceasefire from both
RSF and SAF
• Call for increased humanitarian aid and ensuring that the aid is reaching individuals in need
• Leverage power to stop regional/outside actors from interfering in Sudan
• Enforcement and expansion of UN Arms Embargo to prevent the export and proliferation of military-relevant items

ENSURING YOUR VOICE IS HEARD

BE ORGANIZED: Who are your collaborators? What are the asks, who are you directing it towards and how will you do so?

BE LOUD: As an individual represented by an elected official, there is power in your voice and vote. Once you express your concerns, your representative must respond and take action related to your inquiries.

BE INTENTIONAL: Identify where your interests and the goals of your representative overlap by comparing issues that are important to you to the stated priorities or commitments of the person representing you.

HOW TO IDENTIFY
Champions for Sudan:

-A representative who actively supports and advances the causes and concerns raised by the people they represent.

They may introduce bills, propose amendments, lobby colleagues, or engage in public advocacy to push for changes that align with the desires of their constituents
To focus advocacy efforts in the US effectively, initiating discussions with committee leaders in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, alongside leaders representing states with substantial Sudanese populations, would be a strategic starting point.
For individuals in the UK you can find representatives who have addressed Sudan-related issues in the UK Parliament by searching on Hansard, the official database providing transcripts of parliamentary debates and discussions.

REVITALIZING & SUSTAINING: COMMUNITY EFFORT
• Rest is vital, it is better to take time to take care of yourself so you can continue to show up fully and consistently.
• Be persistent, completing one task doesn't mean the work is done. For example, following up with your representatives to make sure they do what they say.
• Host a cultural event and smaller-scale events. There is power in smaller engagements and they provide an opportunity to show that there is more to Sudan than war.
• Working together, a community approach to advocacy helps alleviate pressure on an individual and helps to reduce burnout.
• Share news and events about Sudan with your social networks online and offline.

5 ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO SUPPORT SUDAN
-Call/email/write your representative
-Join an advocacy group
-Donate to a fundraisers) supporting Sudanese-led initiatives
-Show up to events for Sudan in your local community
-Vote for someone who will represent and advocate for the issues that are important to you
