One of the reasons I love ofmd is because Ed and Stede are both repressed in ways that are inherently exclusive to queer men but in completely different ways. It makes the way they learn from each other so interesting and informs what they need from each other.
Stedeâs able to present himself in a way that reads as queer by modern standards his whole life because of his aristocratic status, but he doesnât want it. (And yes modern standards matter in a historical fiction show that has lines like âew, lameâ đ). His whole life heâs been blamed by everyone in his life for not being âmanâ enough, not being able to even fake it till he makes it. The fact that his queerness is worn on his sleeve at all times with only the virtue of period typical straight obliviousness keeping him hidden makes it so he almost kind of has a âbeen there done thatâ attitude about it. After all, it only ever lead to bad things.
Meanwhile Blackbeard is the exact masculine ideal Stede thinks he (himself) should be, and he doesnât want that. Edâs the perfect definition of a âreal manâ but itâs something he was forced to hastily toss up like a wall for defense decades ago without actually considering what makes him feel like himself. He lights up at the promise of colorful fancy clothes, he likes being soft and kind of ridiculous, he wants to be the one whoâs wooed by someone he likes. But he canât ever really have an outlet for those things because he accidentally became the literal poster child of traditional masculinity. (Itâs the classic âran into the closet so hard you broke through the wall and donât even know where tf you are nowâ lol)
So what happens in episode 5?
Ed letâs Stede âsave the dayâ instead of him which culminates in a ship on fire (peak swash buckling), and Stede letâs Ed stand under the moonlight and basically hear that heâs pretty.

dallon best songwriter comfirmation
although i donât particularly want more music from the band the ending hurts the 12 year old part of my soul a bit
ok im ready to post all of my panic at the disco hot takes and im ready to face the consequences of doing so
1. viva las vengeance is not a bad album
2. pray for the wicked is a bad album except for like 4 songs and high hopes is dreadful
3. dallon was the best songwriter (no offence to ryan but i dont have a goddamn clue what that man was talking about half of the time, i do love his voice though)
4. vices and virtues bonus tracks are better than the actual album
5. i think the obsession with ryan (especially from fans that werenât even around when he was actually in the band) is strange, like leave him alone and let him get on with his life
6. brendon continuing panic after ryan, jon, and spencer left wasnât the horrible backstabbing act yall make it out to be, they all left on their own accord and brendon was a part of the band so why shouldnât he have been allowed to carry on? i do believe he should have given up the panic name when it became a solo project though
7. the obsessive hate is weird as hell, i know you think youâre being funny but if you go out of your way to harass panic fans just because you dont like them anymore then all youâre doing is making yourself look like an asshole (same goes for panic fans who go after idkhow fans because of whatever the hell is going on with dallon, just let people like what they like and if you donât want to see it, block them)
9. pretty. odd was the best album even though i donât understand a lot of the lyrics, they make me feel things and iâll love that album until the day i die (especially northern downpour and behind the sea)
and before anybody takes this as me being one of those âbrendon didnt do anything wrong!!! leave him alone!!1!1â people, i definitely know that brendon has done wrong, i just believe that humans do dumb shit and they can learn from the dumb shit they do and change
While we like to joke about Izzy being in the wrong genre, I would argue that there are in fact at least five distinct genre universes in the world of Our Flag Means Death, and all of them have different rules.
Stede Bonnet, and his crew when theyâre around him, live in a Muppet movie. I didnât come up with this analogy but itâs so accurate. Insane physical comedy and comedy-action where no one really gets hurt. Mild peril but you know everything is gonna work out. Terrible puns and sight gags, but room for sweet, genuine emotional moments too. The rules of time, space, probability and logic will bend for a good joke.
Izzy Hands is in a grimdark action/drama where if someone gets stabbed in the gut they will behave normally and fucking die. (Probably slowly and painfully, of sepsis.) Crucially I think Izzy also lives in a genre where you can only be subtextually queer, and violence (done for or with or to each other) is the only acceptable form of intimacy between men. This is why being forcibly dragged into Stedeâs world, where everyone is busy having silly low-stakes misadventures and being gay and emotionally available all over the main textâand seeing his Subtextual Boyfriend go into this world and love itâsends him round the twist.
The British, Spanish and other imperialist militaries are in a Master and Commander-style naval adventure where theyâre the heroes. This is why they all take it completely seriously when Stede (unintentionally) kills Badminton and takes hostages, even though we can see that he bumbled his way into it ass-backwards. This is also why Stede is so shocked to get actually for real stabbed aboard the Spanish ship. (âDid you mean to do that?â) He didnât realize until that moment that heâd stepped into a different genre. The stabbing is one of the first Surprise Genre Switch moments we get and in retrospect itâs very important for setting up that in this world, the threat of getting hurt or killed is very realâwhich we need to understand to know that there are real stakes much later, when Stede almost gets executed by the British.
