Made the wish. Will update if it comes true
reblog and make a wish! this was removed from tumbrl due to “violating one or more of Tumblr’s Community Guidelines”, but since my wish came true the first time, I’m putting it back. :)
Memorize your route. Your map can and will lie.
Take the safest roads.
Mountain passes shift between our world and another - do not leave your car when you are crossing a mountain pass.
If you see something you believe to be a bear, do not photograph it.
The snow does strange things to our eyes.
Borders shift.
Do not speak to anyone you meet further than a kilometer from the nearest building.
Not everything that appears to be human is.
You may eat at rest stops but leave as soon as possible. If there are no other guests there, leave immediately.
Don’t listen to birdsongs for too long - they will start to tell you things you’d rather not hear.
There are no shortcuts.
Something is looking at you, but it is indifferent to your existence.
The things beneath the soil would rather stay undisturbed. Don’t dig.
Bring a mirror and a clear head.
Leave all religious items at home. They will make a scent trail.
There is a reason we fear wolves, but it isn’t the one you think.
Do not touch scissors on the ground. Ever.
The wind will bite you. Cover up.
The longer you spend in the woods, the stranger the air gets.
Stay calm.
Never approach old houses.
If there is mist on the ground, do not be afraid.
Windmills are further away than they seem.
Don’t look into lakes.
Some farms don’t always exist. Don’t worry if you can’t find it on your return trip.
Don’t drink slow-running river water. If you do, there will invariably be a dead animal upstream.
Bridges are sacred places. Do not disrespect them.
Avoid wetlands.
There are no children out here, only false ones.
If you suddenly get lost, stay very still.
anora (2024) thoughts
aaaahhh, sean baker let me kiss you on the mouth. this film had so much personality and humanity. it's both very loud and very quiet. you not only come to root for the protagonist, anora, but you feel so fucking bad for her by the end. and it's a really complicated cocktail of emotions. because she's framed as both triumphant, yet utterly defeated, and the movie doesn't let you sit comfortably with either position. it paints this young girl with such bold colors, yet also shows you the tragedy of having a bright spark, fighting hard to keep it alive, and being crushed by the world around you anyway
and still the film leaves you with a hopeful note that sometimes, someone does notice you. someone, a really unexpected person, will appreciate you. which is why igor/anora!!!! is so good. i love that he's such a soft oddball, but with a hint of menace. and the fact that he's the side character/goon you don't expect to have depths or connect with the plucky protagonist but he doooes, and they work so well. i love that in the end, in a sort of twisted bittersweet way, anora does get her fairytale. there are references to cinderella, and anora dreams of having her honeymoon at disney. but her "prince" turns out to be the guy with the henchman name, and that's so beautiful to me lol. (he even literally gives her a ring at the end!! they were insane for that)
and they really hit those lil romance notes, because he is always quietly looking out for her, quietly brooding in the background, being sad/upset on her behalf, impressed by the way she fights, amused but also disconcerted and worried!! gah. when he tells the family they should apologize to her. ROMANCE.
also this movie is really funny, like verging on farce a couple of times, and it shifts tone all the time, but always sticks the landing, so that the last scene still feels both sweet and devastating even after all the laughs. go watch it!!!

[The crew is being asked what love is to them]
Leo: What do I think love is? Uh It's like when someone makes your stomach feel all tight, but floaty at the same time, you know? And your cheeks hurt from smiling. And you smile so much that people think something's wrong with you.
Hazel: Love is light. Acceptance. Fire.
Reyna: Pain. Horrible pain. That you want again and again.
Leo: And also, fucking. Twenty-four seven, can't-walk-right fucking.
Jason: Ah! It's just chilling, you know? Kicking it with somebody, talking, making mad stupid jokes. And, like, not even wanting to go to sleep, 'cause then you might be without 'em for a minute. And you don't want that.
Nico: Why are you asking me that? You shouldn't be talking to me.
Piper: Okay, it's like getting into a bath, but the water is like warm chocolate pudding. And The Smiths are playing "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out". Oh. There's warm lighting all over and there're like five dudes massaging you.
Annabeth: And you have a pizza.
Piper: She's right. And you also have a pizza.
Frank: Hey! It's like you become more you. Which normally is like [Makes explosion noises] But now it's okay Because the person, like, whoever, they chose to take all that on. All that weird stuff. Whatever's wrong or bad or hiding in you. Suddenly it's all right. You don't feel like such a freak anymore.
Percy: It's like coming home after a long trip. That's what love is like. It's like coming home.
