The drive home was quiet.
Not uncomfortable. Not tense. Just… quiet.
Y/N sat beside me in the passenger seat, fingers tracing idle patterns against her jeans. Every now and then, I could feel her looking at me, but she didn’t say anything. Didn’t push.
And honestly? I didn’t know how to feel about that.
Part of me had expected more—some grand plea, a desperate apology, something that would take away the ache in my chest. But instead, she had just sat there, letting me be.
And weirdly… it helped.
It wasn’t a quick fix. It wasn’t some magic answer that made everything suddenly fine. But it was something.
I pulled into her driveway, shifting the truck into park.
Still, neither of us moved.
Finally, Y/N sighed, turning to face me.
“I don’t expect things to go back to normal overnight,” she admitted, voice quiet. “And I know I have to earn your trust back.”
I swallowed hard, gripping the steering wheel. “Yeah. You do.”
She nodded, like she had already come to terms with that.
“But I’m willing to wait,” she said softly. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to prove to you that I won’t walk away again.”
I stared at her for a long moment, the streetlights casting shadows across her face.
I wanted to believe her.
And a part of me did.
But another part—the part that still remembered the way she had looked at me that night, like she had already made up her mind, like nothing I said mattered—
That part was scared.
“Okay,” I finally said.
Her breath hitched. “Okay?”
I exhaled, nodding. “We try. But slowly.”
A small, hopeful smile tugged at her lips. “Slowly.”
She hesitated, like she wasn’t sure if she should reach for me again.
This time, I was the one to close the distance.
Not a kiss. Not some big, dramatic gesture.
Just my fingers brushing over hers, a quiet promise that we weren’t completely broken.
That maybe, just maybe—
We could put the pieces back together.
Y/N squeezed my hand lightly before letting go.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asked, her voice laced with something fragile.
I nodded. “Yeah.”
She gave me one last soft look before slipping out of the truck, disappearing into her house.
And for the first time in weeks, I felt like I could breathe again.
Maybe this wasn’t the end.
Maybe it was just the beginning.

The lake was quiet, the water still and reflecting the endless stretch of stars above. It was the kind of summer night that made everything feel infinite—where the heat still clung to the air, but the cool breeze off the water made it bearable. The party at Mason’s house had been fun, sure, but it was loud. Too many people, too much beer, too much heat packed into one backyard.
This, though? Just her and Wally at the lake? This was better.
Y/N sat at the dock’s edge, feet barely skimming the surface of the water. The planks beneath her were warm from the sun, but the night had stolen some of the heat away. Wally sat next to her, arms stretched back to prop himself up, head tilted toward the sky.
“Ever wonder how many stars are actually out there?” he mused, voice lazy and content.
She hummed. “Probably too many to count.”
He let out a low whistle. “Crazy to think about, huh? Like… we’re just sitting here, two dumb kids at a lake, while all that’s up there.”
Y/N turned to him, smiling softly. “Since when did you get all philosophical?”
“Since I started hanging out with you.”
She laughed, shaking her head. “I highly doubt that.”
He just smirked, not arguing.
A comfortable silence stretched between them, filled only by the distant chirp of crickets and the occasional splash of a fish breaking the water’s surface. Y/N leaned back on her hands, letting her head tip toward the stars, soaking it all in.
Then—
SPLASH!
Cold water exploded over her legs, drenching her shorts and soaking into the fabric of her tank top. She gasped, jerking upright as the lake settled, its surface rippling wildly.
“Wally!” she shrieked, whipping her head toward where he had disappeared beneath the surface.
A few seconds passed before he came up, grinning like an idiot, hair dripping and eyes twinkling with mischief.
“What?” he said innocently, floating on his back.
“You ass! That was cold!”
“Nah, it’s fine. You just gotta get in, and you won’t even feel it after a while.” He kicked lazily, sending another small wave toward the dock. “Come on.”
She crossed her arms, glaring down at him. “I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
She really wanted to argue. But the way he was looking at her—challenging, teasing, expecting her to jump in—made it impossible to say no.
With an exaggerated sigh, she stood up, toeing off her sneakers before peeling off her socks. She hesitated for a split second, but before she could second-guess herself, she stepped forward and jumped.
The water swallowed her whole, cool and shocking against her sun-warmed skin. She surfaced with a gasp, pushing her wet hair back from her face.
Wally was laughing, grinning like he’d just won something. “See? Not so bad, huh?”
“I hate you,” she repeated, splashing water directly into his face.
He spluttered, blinking water from his eyes before lunging forward, sending a wave toward her.
She shrieked, kicking away, trying to put space between them. “Wally, don’t you dare—”
Too late.
He caught her by the wrist, tugging her toward him. The movement sent her off balance, and before she could stop it, she crashed right into his chest.
For a moment, they were both frozen, chest-to-chest, the lake swirling around them. His hands had landed at her waist, steadying her, while her fingers instinctively gripped his shoulders.
Her breath caught.
It wasn’t like they hadn’t been close before—hell, they spent nearly every day together over the summer. But this was different. Something about the way the moonlight reflected off the water, the way his arms had wrapped around her without thinking, the way his breath fanned against her cheek.
His gaze flickered to her lips.
Her heart stuttered.
Then, as if realizing the moment was stretching too long, Wally cleared his throat and gently nudged her backward, putting a few inches of space between them. “Didn’t mean to drown you,” he joked, voice just a little rougher than before.
She forced a laugh, shoving his shoulder. “Jerk.”
“Yeah, yeah.” He smirked, flicking water at her face. “Race you to the dock?”
She narrowed her eyes. “You always cheat.”
“I never cheat.”
“Wally, you literally—”
“Three, two—”
“Wally—”
“Go!”
He took off without waiting, kicking hard, cutting through the water like a fish.
Y/N groaned but didn’t hesitate to chase after him, their laughter ringing through the quiet night.
And if she found herself sneaking glances at him—at the way he looked when he was happy, carefree, alive—well…
She’d never admit it.

I didn’t remember getting back into my truck. Didn’t remember starting the engine or driving through the quiet streets of town.
All I knew was the ache.
The deep, suffocating, ripping-me-apart-from-the-inside ache that wouldn’t let up.
My hands clenched the steering wheel as I pulled into the empty football field parking lot. The place was deserted this late at night, the field itself swallowed in darkness, only the faint glow of the scoreboard casting long shadows over the grass.
I killed the engine but didn’t move, just sat there, staring blankly out the windshield.
It wasn’t real.
It couldn’t be real.
Y/N had left me.
Over something that wasn’t even true.
I ran a hand down my face, exhaling shakily. The worst part—the part that made my stomach churn—was that she hadn’t even let me explain.
She’d looked at me like I was someone else. Like all the time we’d spent together, all the memories, all the love—it hadn’t been enough.
Had I really been that easy to doubt?
My chest tightened.
I wanted to be angry. I should be angry.
But all I felt was empty.
My eyes burned as I slumped forward, resting my forehead against the steering wheel.
I thought about every late-night drive, every time she’d fallen asleep on my shoulder, every whispered "I love you" that had once felt so permanent.
And now—now it was just gone.
A sharp, broken sound escaped my throat, and before I could stop myself, I slammed my fist against the dashboard, hard enough to make my knuckles sting.
I wanted to fix it. To go back, to shake her and make her see.
But she wasn’t listening.
She’d already decided.
And that—more than anything—was what shattered me.
Because I had spent my whole life fighting. Fighting for my team, for my friends, for the future I wanted.
But how do you fight for someone who doesn’t believe in you anymore?
How do you fight when the person you love has already let go?
I swallowed hard, staring out at the darkened field, the place that had once felt like home.
Now, it just felt cold.
And for the first time in a long time, I didn’t know where to go from here.
Because without her—
I wasn’t sure where I belonged anymore.

The summer air was thick with warmth, the scent of pine and lake water settling around us as I sat on the hood of my truck, tossing my football absentmindedly in my hands.
Y/N sat beside me, her legs crossed, her fingers tracing the condensation on her slushie cup. We’d spent nearly every night like this lately—just existing together, trying to rebuild what had been shattered.
But tonight, something was different.
Y/N had been fidgeting, glancing at me every so often like she was holding something back. Finally, she sucked in a breath and let it out, turning toward me.
“I ran into someone a few days ago,” she said carefully.
I stopped tossing the ball, resting it against my knee. “Yeah?”
She hesitated. “That girl from the diner.”
My stomach twisted slightly, but I kept my face neutral. “Oh.”
Y/N wet her lips. “She told me something.”
I tilted my head. “What’s that?”
“She said…” Y/N’s fingers gripped the edge of the hood. “She said you were actually talking about me that night.”
My chest tightened, but I stayed quiet.
“She told me you had to leave soon because you had plans with me.”
Silence stretched between us.
Finally, I sighed, setting the football aside and looking her in the eye. “Yeah,” I admitted. “I did.”
Y/N’s breath hitched. “You did?”
I nodded. “After practice that night, I was coming to see you.”
She blinked at me, her eyes glistening under the glow of the streetlamp.
“I had something for you,” I continued, reaching into my pocket. “Something I never got the chance to give you.”
I pulled out a small, slightly worn box and flipped it open.
Inside, nestled in soft velvet, was a delicate silver ring.
Y/N gasped softly, her hand covering her mouth.
“It’s a promise ring,” I said quietly. “I bought it weeks before… before everything. I was gonna surprise you that night, take you out, tell you what you already knew.”
Y/N’s voice was barely above a whisper. “What’s that?”
I exhaled, then suddenly slid off the hood of my truck, landing on the pavement in front of her.
And then, to her absolute shock—
I dropped to one knee.
Y/N let out a strangled noise, her eyes wide. “Wally—”
“Y/N L/N,” I said, straight-faced but eyes full of mischief, “I was gonna do this months ago, but you kinda broke my heart, so I had to reschedule.”
Her mouth parted, emotions warring on her face—shock, guilt, and something deeper, warmer.
I smirked slightly, holding up the ring between my fingers.
“But,” I continued, “since you’ve spent all summer proving that you might just deserve me again, I figured I’d give you the chance to redeem yourself.”
Y/N let out a half-laugh, half-sob, her hands trembling. “Wally…”
I softened, my smirk fading into something more sincere.
“This ring always belonged to you,” I said. “And if you want it… it’s yours.”
Y/N swallowed thickly, blinking down at me as a tear slipped down her cheek.
Then, without hesitation, she reached out, cupping my face between her hands before pulling me into a fierce, desperate kiss.
I melted into her instantly, my fingers slipping against her cheek, my heart pounding against my ribs.
When we finally broke apart, she rested her forehead against mine.
“I love you,” she whispered. “And I swear—I swear—I’ll never doubt you again.”
I smiled, brushing my thumb over her cheek.
“You better not,” I teased. “I don’t know if I’d propose to you twice.”
She let out a wet laugh, then held out her hand.
I slipped the ring onto her finger, my chest tightening as it settled perfectly where it belonged.
Y/N looked at it for a long moment before grinning, wiping her eyes. “You know this is basically a marriage proposal, right?”
I shrugged, standing up and pulling her into my arms. “Guess that means you’re stuck with me.”
Y/N let out a breathless laugh, hugging me tightly.
And as I held her there, beneath the summer stars, I knew—
We had finally found our way back home.

The gym was packed, pulsing with music, the air thick with the scent of sweat, cheap punch, and way too much cologne. The decorations—streamers, fairy lights, and a questionable amount of glitter—did their best to make the place feel magical, but Wally barely noticed any of it.
Because Y/N was standing in front of him, looking stunning.
Not that she didn’t always look good—because damn—but tonight? Tonight, she was on a whole other level.
He’d spent the whole night dancing with her, making her laugh, watching the way her eyes lit up under the glow of the lights. Every second, every little glance, every touch that lingered a little too long had been building up to this.
Now, the dance was winding down, and they had slipped outside, away from the crowd, into the cool night air. The muffled bass of the music still thumped from inside, but out here, it was quiet. Just the two of them under the dim glow of the parking lot lights.
“You’re not as bad at dancing as you said you were,” Y/N teased, swaying slightly in place.
Wally huffed a laugh. “That’s because I was holding back.”
“Oh, really?” She smirked. “Guess I’ll have to see the full performance someday.”
He grinned, taking a step closer. “Maybe.”
They were close now, the space between them barely there, his heart hammering in his chest.
She glanced up at him through her lashes, her usual confidence flickering into something softer, more hesitant. “Wally…”
“Yeah?” His voice was quieter now.
She swallowed, then let out a small breath, like she was working up the nerve to say something. But instead of words, she just… looked at him.
And suddenly, finally, he knew.
He reached up, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Her breath hitched.
“I’m gonna kiss you now,” he murmured.
Her lips parted slightly, and for a second, he thought she might tease him—call him out for stating the obvious. But instead, she just whispered, “Okay.”
So he did.
The first press of their lips was soft, tentative, but the moment she sighed against him, he was gone. His hands found her waist, pulling her in just enough to feel the warmth of her against him. She responded instantly, fingers curling into the fabric of his suit jacket.
It wasn’t rushed, wasn’t hurried—it was slow, warm, something real.
When they finally pulled away, she let out a breathless little laugh. “Took you long enough.”
He chuckled, resting his forehead against hers. “Worth the wait?”
She grinned. “Definitely.”
And with that, he kissed her again—because now that he’d started, there was no way he was stopping anytime soon.

The drive-in was one of the few places in town that still had that old-school magic to it. Rows of cars lined up under the stars, headlights flicking off as the giant screen glowed to life. The sound crackled through the radio, mixing with the scent of buttered popcorn and summer air.
It was the kind of night that felt like it belonged in a movie itself—warm air, fireflies blinking in the distance, and Wally Clark in the driver’s seat, flipping through the drive-in snack menu like it held the secrets of the universe.
“I’m thinking,” he said, tapping the laminated page, “that we should get, like, everything.”
Y/N, curled up in the passenger seat with her sneakers propped on the dashboard, raised an eyebrow. “Everything?”
“Well, not everything,” he amended. “But, like… a pretzel, popcorn, and definitely a milkshake.”
She laughed. “That’s still a lot.”
“Go big or go home,” he said, shooting her a grin. “And we’re already out, so…”
She rolled her eyes but didn’t argue.
A few minutes later, Wally returned from the snack stand, balancing a ridiculous amount of food in his arms. He managed to shove the door open with his hip, barely getting everything inside without dropping it.
“I come bearing gifts,” he declared, handing her a tub of popcorn.
She snorted. “I didn’t even ask for popcorn.”
“Doesn’t matter. It’s movie law.” He set the rest of the food between them and plopped back into the driver’s seat. “Alright. Let’s see if this flick’s any good.”
The movie was some old horror flick—low budget, bad effects, dramatic screaming. The kind of thing that wasn’t actually scary but still made people jump at all the right moments.
Wally, naturally, took it as an opportunity.
Right when the suspenseful music kicked in, he reached over and grabbed her side with a sudden squeeze.
She yelled, nearly launching her popcorn into the air.
Wally was howling with laughter.
“You ass!” she gasped, smacking his arm. “I knew you were gonna do that!”
“Then why’d it work?” he teased, wiping tears from his eyes.
She groaned, stuffing a handful of popcorn in her mouth and refusing to dignify him with a response.
The movie played on, their laughter dying down into a comfortable quiet. Somewhere between the terrible special effects and the ridiculous dialogue, Y/N found herself more focused on the way Wally absentmindedly twirled his straw in his milkshake. The way his profile was lit up by the glow of the screen. The way his arm had settled on the console between them, close enough that if she just moved a little…
She shook herself out of it, forcing her attention back to the movie.
But when the main character let out another exaggerated scream, Wally leaned over and whispered—
“That’s you.”
She smacked him again, and he laughed.

4th of July with Wally

Summer in 1981 felt endless, the kind of season that stretched out warm and golden, like it might never fade. Wally Clark had spent most of it with Y/N, which, if anyone had asked him back in spring, he wouldn’t have expected.
Not that he didn’t like her—he really liked her—but they’d just been friends before. Friends who talked in class, friends who teased each other in the halls. But something had shifted after freshman year ended. She had shown up at the arcade one day when he was there, and they’d played a few rounds of Pac-Man. Then, they ran into each other at the diner the next week and ended up sitting together.
And then, somehow, “hanging out” had turned into every single day.
Tonight was the Fourth of July. Half the town was gathered at the park for fireworks, sprawled on blankets and lawn chairs, waiting for the show. Wally and Y/N had claimed a spot near the back of the field, lying side by side on the grass, looking up at the sky.
“Bet they start late,” she muttered, arms crossed behind her head.
“Always do,” he agreed.
The grass itched against his arms, the scent of barbecues and summer heat lingering in the air. Kids were running around with sparklers, their laughter mixing with the murmur of the crowd.
Wally glanced over at Y/N. The light from a nearby streetlamp caught in her hair, and for the hundredth time that summer, he felt something unfamiliar twist in his chest.
He liked her. More than he was supposed to. More than just friends.
And that was a problem.
Because they’d been hanging out so much that they had to be just friends, right? If she wanted something more, wouldn’t she have said something?
Or maybe she was waiting for him to say something.
Or maybe he was just being an idiot about all of this.
“You’re thinking too hard,” Y/N said suddenly, tilting her head to look at him.
He blinked. “Huh?”
“You do this thing where you get weirdly quiet, which is not normal, and then your eyebrows scrunch like—” She made a face, furrowing her brows in an exaggerated way.
He laughed, pushing her shoulder. “I do not look like that.”
“You so do.”
“Rude.”
She grinned, satisfied, and turned back to the sky.
His chest felt tight. It was so easy with her. The teasing, the late nights, the endless conversations that somehow never got old.
He wanted to tell her. He wanted to say something.
But before he could, the first firework shot into the sky.
A loud boom, a burst of color. The crowd cheered, voices overlapping in excitement. Wally exhaled, staring at the explosion of red and gold.
Maybe it was a good thing he didn’t say anything.
Because right now, in this perfect summer, in this perfect night—he got to keep her like this.
And maybe that was enough.
For now.

The evening was cool and quiet, a gentle breeze whispering through the leaves outside. Inside the small, cluttered room, books and papers lay scattered across the table, a silent testament to the hours Wally and Y/N had spent together. They had known each other since they were knee-high to a grasshopper, growing up in the same town, attending the same school, sharing the same dreams. They had always been close, but there was something different tonight, a charge in the air that neither could ignore.
Wally glanced up from his book, his eyes meeting hers. She sat across from him, chewing on the end of her pen, lost in thought. Her hair, usually a wild mess, was pulled back into a loose ponytail, revealing the faint freckles that danced across her nose and cheeks. The lamp cast a warm, golden light, making her look like she belonged on the pages of one of their favorite childhood stories. He took a deep breath, feeling his heart race in his chest. He had to tell her.
They had been studying for hours, the silence only broken by the occasional rustle of paper or the tick of the clock on the wall. The room was filled with the comforting scent of old books and the faint aroma of the coffee they had brewed earlier. Wally had always found something soothing about the way Y/N's mind worked, the way she could dissect a problem and solve it without breaking a sweat. But tonight, as he watched her, he found himself thinking about things that had nothing to do with homework.
The tension grew, a palpable force that made the air thick with unspoken words. Wally's hand hovered over his notes, but his thoughts were elsewhere. He had heard whispers about his past, about a summer fling that had left him with a bit more experience than she had. It was something she didn't know, something he had never wanted to bring between them. But he couldn't help feeling like it was eating away at him, like a secret he had to share before it consumed him entirely.
Finally, he found the courage to speak. "Y/N," he began, his voice low and hesitant. She looked up, her eyes wide with curiosity. He took a moment, gathering his thoughts, trying to find the right words. "There's something I need to tell you."
Her eyes searched his, looking for a clue, a hint of what was to come. The room seemed to shrink around them, the only sound the thundering of their hearts. Wally knew this was it, the moment that would change everything. He took another deep breath and continued, "I've liked you for a really long time." The words hung in the air, heavy and significant.
Y/N blinked, surprised. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice a soft tremble.
Wally swallowed hard, his eyes never leaving hers. "I mean, I'm in love with you."
The confession hung between them like a delicate thread, vibrating with the weight of its meaning. Y/N's hand stilled on the paper, the pen hovering in mid-air. She looked at him, really looked at him, for what felt like the first time in forever. And then, she set the pen down, her eyes filling with a warmth that made Wally's heart soar.
"Wally," she whispered, "I think I love you too."
The world stopped spinning for a moment, frozen in the wake of her words. And then, as if released from an invisible cage, Wally felt his heart race even faster. He pushed his chair back and moved towards her, his hand reaching out to brush a strand of hair from her face. She leaned into his touch, her eyes searching his, looking for reassurance.
He knew then that this was it, the moment he had dreamed of for so long. He leaned in, their faces so close that he could feel her breath on his skin. And then, as if pulled by an invisible force, their lips met. The kiss was soft, tentative, filled with the promise of so much more.
The kiss grew deeper, more urgent, as the years of friendship melded into something new. They broke apart, gasping for air, their eyes locked. Wally could feel the heat rising in him, a fire that had been smoldering for far too long. He knew that tonight was the night, the night where everything would change.
And as they moved closer, their bodies brushing against each other, the tension that had been simmering for so long finally snapped. Wally's arms wrapped around her, pulling her into a tight embrace, their kiss deepening with each passing moment. His hands slid down to the small of her back, pressing her closer, as if trying to meld their very souls together.
Y/N's hands found their way to his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath his shirt. She knew that this was real, that the feelings she had been burying for so long were finally coming to the surface. The thought of it terrified her and exhilarated her all at once.
They stumbled backward, the chair scraping against the floor, until they were standing in the center of the room. Wally's hands moved to her face, cupping her cheeks gently, his thumbs tracing the line of her jaw. He kissed her again, this time with a passion that left her breathless, her knees threatening to buckle beneath her.
Her eyes searched his, questioning, and he nodded, confirming the unspoken question in her gaze. He took her hand and led her to his bed, their hearts racing in unison. The softness of the comforter was a stark contrast to the fire that burned within them. He laid her down, his eyes never leaving hers, and began to undo the buttons of her blouse.
With trembling fingers, he revealed her soft, bare skin, the sight of it making his breath catch in his throat. He leaned down to kiss her neck, feeling her shiver beneath his touch. His experience from the past whispered to him, guiding his actions, but it was the raw emotion in her eyes that truly directed him.
He pulled away, just enough to remove his own shirt. The sight of his bare chest made Y/N's heart skip a beat. The moonlight danced across his skin, casting shadows that highlighted the contours of his muscles. He was beautiful, she thought, and she felt a surge of desire so intense it was almost overwhelming.
Wally's eyes searched hers, looking for any sign of hesitation. But all he saw was want, a mirror to his own feelings. He leaned down again, his lips finding hers, their kisses growing more frantic, more desperate as they shed their clothes.
The coolness of the room washed over their bare skin, sending shivers down their spines. His hands explored her body, learning every curve and plane as if he had never seen her before. Y/N's breath hitched as his tongue brushed over her nipple, a jolt of pleasure shooting straight to her core. She arched into his touch, her hands roaming over his back, feeling the tension in his muscles.
Their bodies intertwined, a tapestry of limbs and sighs. Wally took his time, savoring every moment, every sensation. He knew he had more experience than her, but it was her reactions, her unbridled passion, that guided him. He kissed his way down her body, leaving a trail of fire in his wake.
He reached the edge of her panties and paused, his eyes meeting hers. She nodded, her cheeks flushed, her breath shallow. He slipped them off, revealing the soft, damp heat of her sex. He took a moment to admire her, the way she was laid bare before him, offering herself completely.
Wally's hand slid down, his fingers teasing her folds. He felt her tense, her muscles tightening around him, and he knew she was ready. He slid a finger inside her, watching her eyes widen, her back arch. She was wet, so wet for him, and he couldn't wait any longer.
He positioned himself at her entrance, his heart hammering in his chest. He pushed in slowly, giving her time to adjust to his size, feeling her warmth envelop him. Her nails dug into his back, a silent plea for more, and he obliged, moving in and out with a steady rhythm.
Their breaths mingled, their bodies moving in perfect harmony. Y/N's legs wrapped around his waist, pulling him closer, urging him deeper. He kissed her again, his tongue mimicking the movements of his hips. She moaned into his mouth, her body tightening around him as she approached her peak.
Wally felt the pressure building, the familiar tightness in his gut that signaled his climax was near. But he held back, focusing on her, on the way she felt, on the noises she made. He wanted to make her come first, wanted to show her that this was more than just sex, that it was a declaration of love and commitment.
Her breath grew ragged, her hips bucking against his, seeking release. He reached between them, his thumb finding her clit, rubbing it in tight, fast circles. Her eyes rolled back, a keening sound escaping her lips as she came apart, her body shuddering with pleasure.
And then it was his turn, the dam breaking as he let go, his orgasm crashing over him like a wave. He buried his face in her neck, his breath hot against her skin, as he emptied himself into her. They lay there, panting, their hearts beating in time with each other's, their bodies still connected.
The room was silent, save for the sound of their breathing and the rustling of the curtains in the breeze. Wally pulled out, his arms still shaking from the intensity of their love-making. He rolled onto his side, pulling her into his embrace.
They lay there, skin to skin, hearts racing, the tension of years of unspoken feelings finally dissipating into the night air. The world outside had continued to turn, but in that moment, all that mattered was the two of them, entwined in the warm cocoon of Wally's bed, finally admitting what they had both known for so long.

Announcer on PA: "He's got the ball. Wally Clark, down the field. He's at the 40, he's at the 30."
The roar of the crowd was deafening. Under the bright lights, the field felt endless, stretching out before me as the final play unfolded. My heart pounded in my chest, adrenaline surging through my veins. This was it—the moment we had trained for, the one we had dreamed about. I could hear my teammates shouting, the distant echo of my coach’s voice cutting through the chaos.
I locked eyes with the quarterback for just a second. The ball was in play. The night air was thick, but I didn’t notice. All I cared about was getting to the end zone.
Then, out of nowhere, I felt it. Announcer: "Clark takes a big hit. He is down."
A hit—hard, fast, brutal. My body lifted off the ground. I had been tackled before, but this was different. My legs flipped up over my head, and for a split second, I was weightless, suspended in the air. Time seemed to slow, and I saw the lights above me, blinding and endless.
Then came the landing.
My head hit the ground first. A sickening crack echoed in my ears. A numbness unlike anything I had ever felt spread through my body. I tried to move. Tried to blink. Tried to breathe.
Nothing happened. Announcer: "This doesn't look good for Wally Clark."
I could hear the crowd, distant and fading. Voices—familiar voices—shouting my name. Footsteps pounded against the turf as people rushed toward me. My mind screamed at my body to get up, to shake it off, to prove that I was fine. But I wasn’t.
I wasn’t fine at all.
My heartbeat slowed, each thud weaker than the last. Panic crept in. Was this really happening? Was this how it ended?
I thought about my mom. About my dad. About my team.
And then, I thought about her.
I wanted to see my girl one more time. To tell her I loved her. To hold her hand and hear her voice. I tried to picture her face, the way she always smiled when she saw me, the warmth in her eyes when she whispered good luck before every game.
But the image faded, swallowed by darkness.
The lights above me flickered, blurred, and then disappeared entirely.
Then, silence.

I don’t know how long it was before I became aware again—aware of her. My girl, my Y/n . I could see her, but I couldn’t touch her. I felt it in the way she lingered in the school halls, searching for something, aching for something that wasn’t there anymore.
And then, the storage room.
The old, forgotten space in the back of the school, hidden behind dust and shadows. I remembered passing it a hundred times but never thinking twice about it. But now, it meant something else. It was hers—the place she made into a home, a refuge, a space where I still existed in some way.
She cleaned it out, piece by piece, as if clearing away the dust could somehow clear away the grief. She hung up pictures of us, placed my varisty jacket on the back of a chair like I might come back and grab it at any moment. She sat there for hours, lost in thoughts of me, whispering words to the empty air.
And God, how I wished I could answer her.
She missed me. She hurt for me. And that pain—her pain—was worse than any hit I had ever taken. Worse than the moment I knew I was dying. Because she was still here, and I wasn’t.
I wanted to tell her she wasn’t alone. That I hadn’t really left. That some part of me would always be in that room with her, in the echoes of our laughter, in the whispers of the past.
She didn’t know it, but she had saved me. Not from death, but from disappearing.
And as long as she kept that space, that memory, that love, our love alive—then maybe, just maybe, I wasn’t really gone.

The bleachers rattled as the football team crowded onto the sidelines, jostling and shouting as the game played on. Y/N stood at the edge, the camera strap tight around her neck, trying—really trying—to get the shot she needed for the yearbook.
“Hey, um… excuse me?” she called over the noise, nudging the nearest player’s shoulder. “I just need a little space.”
No response. Just more shouting, more shoving, more obliviousness.
She tried again. And again. Each time, her voice got softer, her patience wearing thinner.
Then—
“Hey!” Wally’s voice cut through the commotion like a whistle at practice.
The players froze.
He stepped forward, towering just enough to make a point. “She asked you to move. So move.” His usual easygoing tone was gone, replaced with something firm, something that didn’t leave room for argument.
A few of them exchanged glances before grumbling and shifting aside, finally giving her the space she needed.
Y/N blinked up at him, a little stunned. “You didn’t have to do that.”
Wally smirked, tilting his head toward her camera. “Nah, but I figured you’d rather take pictures than waste your breath.”
She huffed, rolling her eyes. “You’re insufferable.”
“And you’re welcome.”
She snapped a picture of him just to be annoying. He only grinned.
