Watching the POTO (2004) for the first time and I’m starting to notice just how childlike and wounded Erik is. Like the parts especially when he takes Christine to his lair and you see this little guy:
He puts the music box on to wake her up as he’s working and the dolls he’s made of Christine onstage. Just a grown man who still has that young boy inside of him, hidden away from the world, who’s wanted to share his own little world with someone. How lonely life must be down in the lair so he’s created a fantasy of his own to keep going. Oh god, this reminds me so much of my life in college when I didn’t really have anyone to be close to and it just hits so hard for me tbh.
Although honestly a part of this is just so wrong because Erik is isolating Christine from all she’s known, just to subscribe to a fantasy and an ideal version of his own desires. Mainly it’s all ego combined with loneliness, but damn this monkey and all these details are going to be the death of me 😭

We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.
