Pannenkoek2012

Super Mario 64 arrived in North America twenty years ago today. I used to speedrun it badly. Pannenkoek2012 is still finding new ways to exploit game mechanics and collect stars with as few A button presses as possible. This involves accelerating to relativistic speeds to travel to parallel universes. On his second channel, he uses programming logic to explain cloning, health, enemy behavior, floating point arithmetic, and more.

Yumi’s Odd Odyssey/Sayonara Umihara Kawase Stage Time Attacks

Two months ago, I told you I was hooked on this game. Since then, I’ve played for 47 hours, reached every door, collected every backpack, and got every survival mode ending. I’ve also brought the heat to the North American version’s leaderboards with dozens of stage times in the top three. Since this game helpfully lets you save replays, I get to show you how I got there. Enjoy!

Xinon – Origin

I just got on the train headed for another PAX East! 70,000 gamers get together in Boston every year to play games, and you can find competition in any game there is. Last year, I took second place in the tournaments for Tetris DS and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, and I’ve been training to win them both this time around. I’ll be updating Twitter just like last year.

Anyway, enjoy some high-energy Game Boy chiptunes courtesy of Xinon. This album has gotten me through some long, tiring weekends.

Hi, Internet! I apologize; I’ve been pretty glitchy lately and things have been crazy, what with the weddings and holidays and conventions and all. My cross-posting pipeline is broken so I have to write the same posts four times. That’s too much work!

My stream is erratic, too, but I’ve been experimenting with restream.io to stream to Mixer, Twitch, Smashcast, and Facebook all at once, usually on Friday nights. Once the cartridge is reseated and things work again, I’ll try to relaunch the blog and the stream. These experiments have been fun, though.

How Americans Eat Hamburgers

UPDATE: Joe Inoue deleted his video and then uploaded it again with a shameless plug at the end.

I put some ketchup on a frozen hamburger today and remembered this old video from Japanese American rocker Joe Inoue joking about how we Americans love our burgers. He went on to make some anime opening songs and a new English YouTube channel called VellySillyBilly.

Lovely Planet

Quicktequila’s Lovely Planet is the anti-modern FPS. Instead of being multiplayer, gritty, and easy, Lovely Planet is single player, cutesy, and incredibly difficult. Calum Bowen’s happy, catchy soundtrack only really fits the first couple worlds. After that, the game introduces cruel new mechanics that demand precision trick shots on the run. I couldn’t beat a single stage in world 5 except the ending. If your keyboard-and-mouse skills are awesome, give this game a shot. It’s different.

Shirakaba – Chiptune Hell

Chiptune Hell is what I wish my room looked like. The desktop is filled with retro gaming gear I’d have to get at Warp Zone or Ohayocon’s dealer’s room. Is that a CRT TV with a built-in Super Famicom?

I’m trying a few new things with this post. Jetpack is now cross-posting to my rarely-used Twitter and Google+ as well as Facebook and the usual RSS feed. Even if none of those things reach you, you can now subscribe by email in the sidebar. (Can I even do that on Tumblr? That was a nice feature in Jetpack...)

I’ve also introduced tags and tagged up all my previous posts Tumblr-style. If you want to see all the music posts, other posts that have too many links, my original content, or an RSS feed of just the pixiv posts, you can get that now.

Phonebloks

I like a good half-baked design every now and then, and this modular cell phone caught my eye. Each of my past few cell phones have met their end from just one component failing. With a Phonebloks phone, you could simply replace the bad component and be good as new. Motorola’s on board with this now, and I hope the project continues to gain traction. How about blocks for buttons and a D-pad?
