orange hoodie appreciation post
Can you guys even believe that 3 months ago, we didn’t have the Balloon Squad in our lives? Like we didn’t know a Yousef Acar, Elias Bakkoush, Muttasim Tatouti, Adam Malik, and Mikael Øverlie Boukhal??
Thank you Julie for these boys ❤️
okay but elias woke up a little later today - he wasn’t planning on meeting the boys until much later - and he’s surprised when he runs into sana, smuggling food from the kitchen into her bedroom. she’s still in her pyjamas and she isn’t wearing any make up or anything, which, well, it’s nearly 1pm. so it’s a bit odd, especially for her.
elias asks her if she’s okay, and why she’s still in her pyjamas. and sana just shrugs and says, quite aggressively, “you’re still in your pyjamas.” and sometimes elias would bite back, tease her, but he also knows when to draw the line. and he can just see that sana’s not in the mood, so he just says, “any plans today?”
sana stares at him and shrugs, says, “nei”, then makes her way into her room, shutting the door, and elias leaves her be for a little bit. but a few hours later, elias notices she still hasn’t left her bedroom, which is kind of unlike sana. so he knocks on her door.
she lets him in, but she’s kind of irritated; elias ignores it and says, “what’re you up to?” as he plonks himself on sana’s bed (which causes sana to sigh irritably, but she shuffles a little to give him space to get comfy anyway).
“nothing,” sana says irritably; dismissively. elias just looks at her and says, “okay” and waits to see if she elaborates. when she doesn’t, he says, “what was all that about last night?”
sana raises her eyebrows. “i’m allowed to have friends around, elias,” she snaps. “you do all the time.”
“yeah, but mine don’t drink in the house, and there’s never twenty of us,” elias replies fairly, but not unkindly. he looks at her, notices how deflated she seems, how upset she looks, and so he just says, “is everything okay?”
“yes,” sana says quickly. “everything’s fine.” which - okay, okay, sana isn’t in the mood for talking. that’s fine. so, elias says, “how about a movie?”
sana looks at him, frowning, and says, “what movie?”, and elias tells her that there’s this film on today, the one they used to watch all the time when they were little. and sana, despite herself, smiles at the memory, and laughs when elias does a (very bad) impression of one of the main characters. and elias thinks there is nothing that makes him quite as proud as when he makes his baby sister laugh.
they end up reheating leftovers from the other night and sit cross-legged on the sofa together, watching this film, which is funny but kind of cheesy and not actually as good as either of them remember it being, but it’s okay, because sana’s smiling a lot more now; seems more content.
elias’ phone rings just as the films ending and shit, time got away from him; he’d agreed to see the boys today. he picks up the phone and starts talking to them, to adam, and says, “just come over to mine, man, it’s chill, my parents are–” but then he catches sana’s expression; it’s small, subtle, the way her eyes fall to her lap and she prods at her food a little disinterestedly. maybe other people wouldn’t notice it, but elias does. so, he says, “actually, guys, sorry, film without me today, i forgot i made other plans.”
the boys erupt into indignant shouts about loyalty and how important their youtube channel is, but elias silences them, hangs up the phone, and sana says, “what other plans do you have?”
“well, they made a sequel to this film, and i think it’s stupid that neither of us have seen it”. and okay, he expects that to make sana smile, but instead she frowns and says, “but they aren’t airing the sequel at the moment.” so elias rolls his eyes, then says, “we’ll just have to find something else to watch, then.” and sana looks at him for a moment before rolling her eyes and saying, “okay. find something, then.”
she may not have said it, but she didn’t need to, because elias can already tell that sana’s feeling just that little bit better. and he’s so glad to see it, because he really hates seeing sana upset; can’t stand it, because despite how much he teases her, he truly does think there’s no one in the world who deserves happiness quite as much as his sister. and maybe that’s why, when they squabble over the last portion of food, elias lets sana have it. just this once.

“It’s important to show mixed families anyway, because that’s real life. Personally, I felt so comfortable and felt very understood. There’s a misconception that I can’t relate to the quote-unquote ‘Asian-American experience’ because I didn’t grow up with an Asian mom and dad,” Lana continues. “That’s just not true. I am Asian American, and so playing a girl who is half Korean, half white, but her white dad tried really hard to connect with her mom’s heritage — that’s very familiar to me.”
SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR
Both in the movie and the clip when the characters first meet the guys Miquel and David both act super suave and within barely a minute of talking they convince Nora/Nicole (lol didn’t even realize that connection) to go off with them. It should also be mentioned that in doing so the both girls leave their friends and go with the guy. The guy then takes them to a semi remote place basically where there are less people and they both make them seem like really put together guys and even make up false stuff to try to make the girls like them. David with his family background and Miquel possibly with the musical stuff.
Another big similarity is that when Nora and Nicole both bring up how late it’s and that they probably should be heading home Miquel and David both distract them Miquel saying don’t look at it, it doesn’t matter, and saying that it’s actually 9:45 while David physically turns Nicole’s watch back so she wouldn’t know the time. Both are manipulating techniques to get them to ignore the fact that it’s way too late and they should probably be heading home instead of continueing to hang out with them.
Miquel and David both kiss the girls without asking and both Nora and Nicole push them back and then leave to go home.
And then the very next time Nora/Nicole see the guys is when they show up unwarranted to their school. I should also mention at this point that both David and Miquel are older than their female counterparts and are out of high school so they have no business being there and they also found the address themselves. David and Nicole then hang out while Nora and Miquel make plans to go the musical together.
Okay this is going to make not a lot of sense if you haven’t seen the clip because I’m not going to go into detail about what happened in this scene because it’s a little NSFW but just know that Nicole and David are on a rollercoaster and that Nicole feels an euphoric feeling for the first time. WHICH IS SO FUCKING SIMILAR TO THE TRAILER. Because that’s basically what Nora’s saying!!!
Lastly stuff that could be paralleled but we don’t know yet is that later in the movie David sees Nicole hug her best friend who’s a guy (their relationship is platonic) and gets super jealous for no reason and starts to beat him up which leads to Nicole and David breaking up. Depending how closely España follows the og (which doesn’t seem like a lot) this scene could totally be the fight scene. It could play out differently but either Miquel or Alejandro could get jealous of the other and then a fight breaks out. Lastly later in the movie David actually sexually assaults Nicole which would parallel if Miquel is Nico and how he is most likely Nora’s assaulter
I understand why people are upset that Noora got so much attention this season and why it seemed unfair to Sana that Noora was taking up so much of her story. But I think she was actually important for this season, not just because we need Noorhelm closure or because she’s one of Sana’s closest friends. The reason why I think Julie decided to get her tangled into this Yousef situation is because she represents the cool white, Norwegian girl that Sana sometimes wishes she could be.
Don’t get me wrong, I know Sana is proud of her heritage and she’s proud to be Muslim, but a lot POC who’ve been marginalized have at some point thought about how much easier their life would be if they were just a little blonder or a little lighter or a little skinnier. That resentment Sana builds towards Noora is not just about the kiss. It’s that Noora is this pretty, skinny, white, Norwegian girl who always seems to get what Sana thinks she can’t.
Even their first conversation about Yousef had a slightly territorial tone to it. Sana says some rude things about Muslim men who date white girls but I think what she’s really saying is, “This is where I finally feel like I’m not constantly one step below you. You have everybody else in this country you could date. Why are you doing this to me?” Elias talks about how hot Noora is, the Pepsi-Max girls talk about how they’d kick the entire girl squad out except for her because she’s so pretty, and William just immediately falls in love with her. Sana sees people fall for her, praise her, and give her the benefit of the doubt all of the time. Meanwhile, Sana has to deal with racist assholes who stare at her on buses and abuse her online.
She overhears the PM girls shit on her, and then she hears them say that they’d keep Noora on because she’s so pretty. And then she walks out to see Noora making out with Yousef right after having felt like she really connected with him. And she knows they don’t have the religion barrier that her and Yousef do. It was just another humongous white slap in the face. That’s why she breaks. That’s why she gets so angry about it, and that’s why she can’t talk about it with Noora because the issue is more than just a kiss or a hook up, it’s everything Noora represents in her mind.
That’s why Noora was important this season. That’s why the first clip we see in ep6 after Sana breaks has a long, slow-motion shot of Noora’s hair flowing freely in the wind. It’s a purposeful contrast between her hair and Sana’s hijab, between the pretty white Norwegian society Sana feels she could never truly belong to and the Muslim community she’s continually harassed for being a part of.
