Been watching the makeover scene on repeat because it's fascinating. Mike is literally making up El the way he wants her to be, very feminine, blonde, the idealized American girl. She doesn't get a say in her clothes or her makeup or her hair, they are simply decided for her while she is obviously very uncomfortable. Secondly, Mike doesn't call her pretty until she's got the wig on, as if at that moment he realized "Shit, I like to spend time with this person, she's a girl, that means I must have a crush on her, quick call her pretty" It's watching two kids pretending to be someone they're not.
