Hey seiishin, I'm a beginner artist and i was hoping you could give a full tutorial on how you color?

hello! this is a bit of a hard question to answer since i dont think giving a tutorial of how i colour without learning any foundational colour concepts first would be very beneficial, so i'll try to give you some basic tips on picking colours instead since this is a very VERY expansive topic and im simply not the kind of person that can pass on that knowledge very well especially since im not the best at it lol

when im picking colours for my drawings, i try my best to "unify" the colour pallet so that it seems more cohesive, this tip from ggdg sums it up pretty well i think

other than that, i usually try to pick colours that generally look good together based on different colour harmony concepts, like these!

i'll try and show you an example with something i'm working on right now. you'll notice i didn't colour pick tinkaton's colours from its art and went for a warmer pink and saturated the blues of the hammer a little.

you'll also notice the canvases i draw on are NEVER pure white. this isnt to say pure white is something that can never be used but white is a colour that usually influenced by surrounding colours, so pure white in most pallets just wont look right. so its not usually a colour i would use as a backdrop if youre trying to pick good colours for your art. but again, there's always exceptions and this isnt a hard rule. here's pure white compared to the colour my canvases usually start with

another thing i should touch on briefly is colour relativity and the importance of value and saturation.

value is SUPER SUPER important for making sure all the colours in your art stand out from each other and read clearly. as you can see here, most of the values here stand apart from each other, and i can see that i probably need to adjust the darkness of the light blue in comparison to the pink hair tips, though the lineart separates them well enough already i think. this is also a good way tocheck you havent made any dark skinned characters too light. values are important guys!

hot tip: put a layer of pure black on top of your art and set that layer to "colour" and BOOM! you can see the values of your art in grayscale.

and i'll also briefly touch on colour relativity. because we percieve colours relative to each other, we usually read a colour as something its not when its surrounded by certain other colours. let's take a look at my background drawings in the cover i did for the shuichi saihara zine:

Hey Seiishin, I'm A Beginner Artist And I Was Hoping You Could Give A Full Tutorial On How You Color?

though i only used a bunch of different purples, when all of them are perceived in relation to each other, a warmer purple can look like blonde hair amongst all the other purples!

as for the brushes i use while colouring, i like textured brushes! i bought these so i cant share them for free but im sure there are many free alternatives out there

Hey Seiishin, I'm A Beginner Artist And I Was Hoping You Could Give A Full Tutorial On How You Color?

anyway, sorry if this isnt exactly what you wanted, but there are TONS of people out there that have worded this better than i ever could, i would suggest looking up some youtube vids on colour theory, but i hope these little tips are useful enough!

I need assistance.

(and I honestly hate that I do)

UPDATE: So I have 8 payments to make that must be over $50. I told this to the person who defaulted on the internet bill. "How much is the payment plan" when I told him that $50 over 8 months only amounts to $450.

I have commissions open, though they will be slow due to me consistently depression napping and always in bed lately.

You can find the commissions here: https://ko-fi.com/curruidcoinhenn/commissions

The OG text is under the cut.

UPDATE: So I Have 8 Payments To Make That Must Be Over $50. I Told This To The Person Who Defaulted On

Hi.

So, recently, I've ended up in debt. Wow, how could I. The thing is, I've never been in debt before and I, rightfully, freaked out about it yesterday. I owe $730.03 for a service I barely used for a month because it's in my name and the person who was supposed to pay it stopped paying it on time. Leaving it to go to a debt collector.

And yeah, that was my bad! I learned my lesson from it. No more having bills in my name that aren't paid for by me. The rest is kind of long and rambly so you can skip to the tl;dr by pressing ctrl+f and typing in tl;dr.

I woke up yesterday to a text message about it and cried. I cried, I contacted the person who was supposed to pay, who said he'd fix it but never paid anything towards it last month. Leaving me to get called and texted by debt collectors.

And yeah, I get it, money's tight during the holidays. The unfortunate thing is that this guy? I know he's paid bi-weekly to do barely anything but game at his work. He's got loans, he's got debt to a lot of things he never paid off and I should've taken that as a sign.

I didn't. I stupidly believed he'd pay and he just let it get later and later until I bothered him about it. And then he'd pay, and the cycle would begin again. He told me to cancel it, I tried, they wouldn't unless I paid.

The account is closed now. And the bill got sent to a debt collector.

I want to get this squared away as soon as possible. Clear it out so there's nothing tying me to this anymore. To a bill I struggled to pay until I told him to take care of it because I couldn't pay it anymore-- pay for a service I wasn't using. I scrambled month to month to get the $180 needed to pay for that bill because it was oh-so-important.

And I've tried to help him with this. Tried to help him with his finances and bills, as I'm broke consistently due to being unable to get a job (and I have tried for years) and cut things out when I'm not able to afford them. Yeah, he's in debt to people. He's got loans, but he has payments to pay them back that don't affect how much he can put towards bills. I've calculated how much he can put aside back when he asked for my help (which he never took! I may be bad at my own finances but that actually makes it easier for me to help others, funnily enough), and he never did. It was suddenly all gone every time.

tl;dr: I bitched for a while about how I tried to help this guy but he didn't use the help I gave him (after asking for said help).

But. That's not the point here. The point is, just like that damn phone payment he made me pay when I didn't have the money to and had to beg for help on it, he's left me a debt I can't pay.

And I hate it. I hate that I can't pay it.

I have a Ko-Fi set up. A goal set up. It's $750 for the goal because I don't know how much'll be eaten by fees and it's better safe than sorry.

I'm struggling again, and I hate it. The new year has given me a debt that I can't pay, and I have to rely on help from everyone else.

If you want something like a doodle or something for your assistance, just IM me here. I'll try to draw it to the best of my ability (sfw only)

The ko-fi is here: https://ko-fi.com/curruidcoinhenn

If you can donate to help clear it, please do so. If not, please at least share this so someone can help. I appreciate it all.

A Pokémon Art study:

Wasn't Feeling particularly inspired to draw a whole finished illustration so I settled on a doing a bunch of sketches and as one thing led to another, it became a whole study.

Suprisingly: It actually did refresh and inspire me cause now I wanna test this new skill some more!!

The Girls
Notes:
-Moreso than the standard anime style, (try to) see torsos as simplified ball jointed dolls.
- On fatter forms: Bust makes up majority of the rib section, creating more circular forms.
- Focus on flow and simplified designs more so than 100% Accuracy.
-5-6 Heads tall.

On the right side:
Melony, Katy, Palina, Iridia, Nessa.
They have been broken down to basic shapes and proportions.

On the left:
4 rows of faces looking around at different angles. The bottom most row has been broken down into what planes build the facial structure of this style.
The Guys
Notes:
-Legs Vs. Torso proportions seem to vary more than the girls??
- Base torso shape can best be described as "Slightly compressed rectangles."
- Shape over accuracy unless character is highly muscular.
-5-6 Heads tall.

On the right side:
Team skull Grunt, Gaeric, Professor Laventon, Blue (Gary Oak) , Player character (pokemon Scarlet violet).
They have been broken down to basic shapes and proportions.

On the left:
4 rows of faces looking around at different angles. The bottom most row has been broken down into what planes build the facial structure of this style.
Extra Practice:
Goals: try to understand how the face shape is constructed.
Notes: Newer gens seem to have thinner faces while older gens seem to have wider. (I will try to average the sizes out to something I like)

Current notes:
The two major cures in the face occur in the eyebrow and cheek, which in this style is located just below the nose.
in between is usually a concavities but can be made of 2 convexities.

on the top row is multiple different styles of breaking down the face in order to better understand the proportions and shapes using Jessie and James as the example.

On the bottom is multiple portraits of various pokemon characters with a red and blue line next to their face used to practice and examine the line shapes.

on the bottom right is a series of faces sketched repeatedly as the artist tries to understand how to build a face.
Various poses from Adorkastock's Deviantart page used as reference and transformed into pokemon style characters. due to this being a study of the base form of pokemon characters, they have not been given costumes and have been left in a state where the undersketch breaking down the shapes is still visible.
Various sketched faces from the pokemon series, both anime and games, used to understand how the official artists of the pokemon team draw different angles and expressions.

Key take-away!! Not only are art studies good in general for learning but can be a good way to refresh and inspire yourself!! Even if it isn't your usual style.

shout out to @adorkastock 's HUGGE repitoir of poses as they were used for the "Reference practice: From Non-Anime reference photos" section as I practiced drawing something not from Pokémon and translated it into Pokémon's art style.

Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.

If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.

Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.

Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.

I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.

Client Sketch Vs. Final Illustration
Client Sketch Vs. Final Illustration

Client sketch vs. final illustration

When someone commissions me, I absolutely love getting a rough sketch/doodle of their concept—it makes the first steps of an illustration (composition/posing) so much easier.

I'll never ever judge a client for a messy sketch!! (And also, no pressure to send something like this if you'd like the artist to take the creative reins on your piece.)
