So like, in a modern au, Varian lives in like a farming village with his dad that is like two hours away from the city. Rapunzel and Eugene (since they would be a part of the government technically) would live in some kind of a mansion along with Rapunzel's Parents (Rapunzel's dad could be like a mayor of something) but later, Rapunzel and Eugene buy a little cottage near the borders of the city. Not too far away from the city, but enough to get away from all the chaotic noice, just somewhere calm. And Varian lives with them! Somewhere at a time (like what would the equivalent of season 3 be) he moves in with them into the cottage. And every weekend, he goes to his dad's. Also, since they live on a farm, Varian always brings back some fresh, quality fruits and vegetables for his friends. When he goes to his high school in Corona (where I imagine he met Hugo, Yong and Nuru), he always brings them some of the food, especially for Hugo, who never really got the luxury of having fresh, nice food like this. He usually east most of it anyway JDJDKKF

like how Amity dyed her hair green and kept it short and neat because her mother liked it that way, and after she stopped following her mother’s orders, she dyed it purple and let it grow long

like how Vee kept her hair short and brown when she had to pretend to be Luz, but now that she is her own person, her hair is colorful and fluffy

like how Camilla used a straightening iron on her hair and after she refused to allow society to tell her how to parent, she threw her straightener out and let her hair be curly again

like how Hunter had his long hair and that one strand of hair because Belos wanted him to look just like Caleb, and after he escaped Belos’s control, he cut it short and became his own person.

and when Belos possessed him, Hunter’s hair grew long again

I think Donella’s base/orphanage is an abandoned prison for a number of reasons.

It’s ironic, and they’re all criminals so it fits the theme

who would look for a mob boss in a prison? Just a good hiding place.

really helps build the idea of uniformity and compliance in the thieves. She treats them very regimented, getting up at the same time every day and having very strict rules. If you don’t want to follow them, you’re back out on the street.

it helps communicate how trapped hugo feels in his current situation, and how he thinks that he is inherently bad. He sees himself as a criminal who can’t get better, and the fact that he lives in a prison cell really adds to that.

Of course, none of the cells have doors, and the ones that do have broken locks. The place is very old. Most of the cells have blankets and tarps up so you cant see into the cell, with some things here and there. Very visually messy, unlike a prison, but literally very clean and organized.

Hugo’s room is especially very clean and organized compared to everyone else’s, if not cluttered. The most luxurious thing he has in there is a big pile of pillows instead of a bed (Based on one of the concept drawings where hes all lounged out in a pillow nest), and his nice furniture. He has nice things, better than the other kids because of his status, but everything nice in his room has to be too big to steal, or nailed down. Its very tidy, as luxurious as it can be, and very obviously still a prison cell- a good representation of Hugo himself. Donella does not like to be bothered, so unless it’s an emergency, you deal with the other children yourself. Hugo is not very popular among the other orphans- hes seen as a suck up, and only ever spends his time around Donella.

I MADE A VILLAIN VARIAN MOODBOARD BUT IT'S SO BAD

YALLLL here are some random vat7k headcanons that nobody asked for but i wanted to get it out in the world :D

- Hugo constantly teases Varian about his height even though Varian is the second tallest person in the group

- Yong sometimes joins Hugo in the teasing even thought he's like over a head shorter than both of them

- Varian doesn't usually laugh unless it's like a nervous laugh or something but Hugo manages to make him burst out laughing often

- Yong is the best cook in the group and often is the one cooking their meal (Varian is the second best and sometimes helps him, Hugo and Nuru can't cook for shit JSHDJD

- They all often sleep in one bed/tent together. At first they had to do it so they wouldn't spend too much money on inn rooms and would just get two big beds or even just one

- But after a while they got so used to it they do it on purpose so now they can't sleep without the gang cuddles 😤❤️

- Hugo is a very touchy person and sometimes. just like. sits on Varian's lap. Only ever to tease him and/or fluster him and only ever for like a few seconds, and at first it annoyed Varian but when he started crushing on Hugo, it got him FAINTING.

- At the beginning of their journey, Hugo had a lot of trouble being a team player and looking out for other people and just like. always did his own thing. he didn't understand why it was such a big deal at first. He can pick up his own slack, no one needs to worry about him and he needs to worry about no one. (He's a Toph kinnie) He thought that's just how the world worked.

- But the group started calling him out for it, saying that if he's gonna be with them until the end of their journey, he needs to learn how to work with people. Hugo gets defensive and they all start arguing. They tell him that they care about him and that he can't just "do his own thing" while they're running away from something or fighting someone, that they want to keep him safe, they want to keep each other safe,

- But Hugo just has a hard time believing that someone would care about him enough that that they'd risk their own lives to save him (and this could lead to some potential angst, or fluff, or both lmao)

- Hugo never tasted many kinds of food, especially for example candy (since they probably wouldn't have that much in the iron kingdom and it would be expensive too, and i doubt that Donella bought him any sweets)

- So when the gang discovers this, they secretly buy candy and exotic food for Hugo saying that they just bought it for the whole group so he wouldn't think it's for him but they kinda give him mist of it

- Hugo's favourite Candy is caramel and marshmallow

- Hugo also very much enjoys Varian's hot cocoa

Aaaaand I think this is all i can remember right now but I probably have more somewhere deep in my brain hsjjfkfkfk, let me know if you'd like to hear more headcanons or if this was useless! :D
